Coach Palmer Gets 500th Win;
Hutson Gets His 400th--(Dec. 3, 1999)
Today's Bakersfield Daily Californian and Long Beach Press-Telegram both reported on significant milestones for two longtime coaches in the CIF Central Section and the CIF Southern Section, respectively. Yesterday's games at the Buchanan-Clovis West "Battle of the Central Valley," featuring most of the top teams in California, marked the significant events for Bakersfield High, coached by Mark Hutson and Long Beach Poly, coached by Ron Palmer.
Of his team's win yesterday, Palmer told the Press-Telegram: "It's a significant milestone. All the teams that I have coached have contributed to that mark and all the teams and players were outstanding. I think the 500th win is a tribute to the past teams that I've coached as well as to this one right now. Hopefully we can make this a memorable year for everybody."
According to the PT article, Palmer, now in his 21st year of coaching, has amassed a 500-126 record in that time while winning 16 Moore League championships, six CIF championships and one national title in 1994. He left Poly in 1985 to coach at Long Beach State, but he returned three years later to coach the Jackrabbits again in 1988.
According to the Bakersfield Californian, Hutson is the winningest coach in CIF Central section history (boys or girls) as he begins his 22nd year at the Driller helm.
Congratulations to both Coach Palmer and Coach Hutson from SoCalHoops.
