Chaminade Classic: Riordan &
Chaminade In Finals--(December 30, 1999)

As we've said the last few days, we're up in Santa Maria/Santa Barbara, away from much of the action from the "big" tournaments taking place in SoCal (the BIW, the SD Nike, and the countless other "local" tournaments), but we've still got our sources for news for most of the tournaments, and for those we haven't been able to attend, we'll have recaps in the next few days and over the weekend.  One of those we have been able to follow pretty closely from afar is the Chaminade Christmas Classic.  Here's the schedule for today's finals and a recap of what happened yesterday in the quarterfinals (well, most of them)

10:00a.m.   Kennedy v. Lancaster   13th Place
11:30 a.m.   Brentwood v. Calabasas   11th Place
1:00 p.m.   Faith Academy v. Canyon   7th Place
2:30 p.m.   Quartz Hill v. Campbell Hall   5th Place
4:00 p.m.   Monroe v. Grant   Consolation Championship
5:30 p.m.   Moorpark v. Pleasant Grove   3rd Place
7:00 p.m.   Riordan v. Chaminade   Championship

Championship Quarterfinals

SF Riordan 55, Moorpark 53

Moorpark High's run through the Chaminade tournament ended abruptly Wednesday when Orlando Hodges sanka three-pointer at the buzzer to give San Francisco Riordan a 55-53 semifinal victory at Chaminade.  The Crusaders face Chaminade today at 7 p.m. in the championship game as they try to avenge a 50-36 loss to the Eagles in last year's final.  Moorpark managed to hang close the entire way even though Todd Tomlinson, their highest scoring player only manged 12 points (and 9 turnovers) in the game. Moorpark (10-2) took a 53-52 lead with 19 seconds left on a layup by Jeff Illions.  Tomlinson, who averaged 40 points in the first two tournament games, was limited to 12 points on four-of-11 shooting, and he committed nine of Moorpark's 21 turnovers and sat on the bench for nearly half of the second half as the Musketeers saw their 47-39 fourth-quarter lead erased. Riordan took its first lead at 48-47 with 2:20 remaining on a three-pointer by Hodges.  The Musketeers managed only one basket during the first 5:30 of the final quarter.  The rest of the Musketeers seemed disoriented without Tomlinson. But Illions kept Moorpark in the game with nine points in the third quarter.  Illions and teammate Lion Moser each finished with 15 points.  Moorpark took its biggest lead at 29-19 late in the first quarter on the strength of a 13-5 run.

And in the other Championship Semifinal, Chaminade defeated Pleasant Grove of Utah, but we couldn't get in touch with anyone at the school (we're up in Santa Maria/Santa Barbara right now) and the Times and Daily News didn't have the score--the game didn't start until after 8:00 p.m. and obviously didn't end until after their deadlines to print, so we have none of the usual details of the game.  As soon as we get them, we'll post them up.

Fifth Place/Seventh Place Bracket

Campbell Hall 64, Canyon (Canyon Country) 50

Campbell Hall was never really threatened in this game as they broke out to a 21-10 first quarter lead, and despite being outscored 24-11 in the second quarter the Vikings (11-4) still led 32-28 at the half and manged to extend the lead in the second half behind Hassan Bassiri's 22 point performance, outscoring Canyon 17-13 in the third and 15-9 in the fourth quarter.  Robert Locke had 8, and Jesse Foster had 13 points in the win.  Campbell hall will face Quartz Hill in the 5th place game today at 2:30 p.m.

Quartz Hill 89, Faith Academy (Phillipines) 78

Quartz Hill was led by Michael Williams' 25 points, and by Kevin Johnson's 20 in a game which started out tiwht Quartz Hill taking a 21-16 first quarter lead and then extending it by outscoring Faith Academy 25-19 in the  second to take a 46-35 halftime lead. Quartz Hill (8-4) never trailed again after that despite a fourth quarter scoring outburst by both teams in which Faith outscored Quart Zhill 26-24.

Consolation Quarterfinals

Monroe 68, Brentwood 63 (2 OT)

Alfredo Cuevas hit a three-pointer at the end of regulation to force overtime and the Vikings prevailed in double overtime of a consolation game.   Robert Palafox led the Vikings (8-5) with 26 points, including seven in overtime. Cuevas had 13 points and six rebounds.

Grant 72, Calabasas 39

Grant was led by Dewayne Anderson with 16 and Brandon Edison's 14. Mike Charleston added 10 and Krishna Evans hit for 11 as the Lancers (10-2) beat Calabasas (1-13), which had no player score in double figures.   Grant and Monroe will meet today at 4:00 p.m. for the Consolation finals.

13th Place Bracket

Kennedy 61, El Camino Real 48

Dax Grooms led Kennedy (6-8) with 23 points and 13 rebounds, and Youssef Haide had 10 points, as did Mario Chacon. El Camino (4-6) was led by David Roubidoux with 13 and from what we can ascertain, Justin Saad-Anthony either didn't play (more likely) or didn't score (not likely).  Kennedy will meet Lancaster in the 13th place game today at 10:00 a.m.

Lancaster 71, Van Nuys 40

Lancaster (6-5) was led by Mike Wright with 18 and Ryan Jefferson 11, and Teddy Myers with 12.  Van Nuys (0-12) remains winless despite J.P. Poticar's 18 points.  Lancaster will play Kennedy at 10:00 a.m.
