Touring The Coast: Carpinteria Cage
Classic Starts Today--(Dec. 16, 1999)

In order to get to Santa Barbara on Saturday (Royal Invitational), and San Luis Opisbo next week (Mission Prep Rim Ratter Holiday Hoops Invitational), you've got to make your way up Highway 1 through Ventura County and on into Carpinteria. So why wait until the weekend to make the trip? Stop along the way, just short of Montecito in Carpinteria for the 32nd Annual Carpinteria Cage Classic, which will begin today.   Admittedly, no national top 25 teams, but still some good local SoCal talent. There will be four games today, with four games today, Friday and Saturday.

Santa Ynez opens the today at 3 p.m. against Rosamond, followed by Bishop Diego vs. Brentwood at 4:45, L.A. Baptist vs. Mission Prep at 6:30 and Pasadena Poly vs. Carpinteria at 8:15. Bishop Diego, 6-1, is coming off a win in its own tournament and features a high-scoring guard in Jamie Sanchez. Carpinteria, 3-4, has lost four straight but also has a high-scoring guard in four-year starter Chris Redfield. Santa Ynez, 2-5, features a promising sophomore center in 6-7 Matt McKinney. Rosamond has also been playing respectably and could be a potential favorite.

See you there.
