Scores & Recaps: All The
Boys' Dec. 11 Games--(Dec. 13, 1999)
We've tried to get as many of the scores and details of games taking place all over the SoCal area as possible from Saturday, and we think we've gotten most of them. The recap for just the scores is listed first; details follow below. If you know of a score or a result we missed, send us an e-mail, or post it up on the message board. For the tournaments, they're organized alphabetically by the name of the tournament; for non-league games, the best we can do is organize them alphabetically using the first letter of the winning team.
We will continuously update this page following the games to insert any late scores, so if you don't see a score or the details, check back later. . .

Tournament MVP--Nick Curtis (Oxnard)
Championship
Oxnard 63, Santa Barbara 62 --Tournament MVP Nick Curtis made two free throws with 24 seconds remaining and Oxnard High held on to defeat Santa Barbara, 63-62, in the championship game of the Thousand Oaks boys' basketball tournament Saturday night at Thousand Oaks. The Yellowjackets (7-1) overcame a six-point deficit in the final minute, led by all-tournament selection Eric Webb, who made a 10-foot jump shot with 54 seconds left and a three-point basket 21 seconds later, pulling Oxnard within 62-61. Webb, a junior guard, then disrupted an inbounds pass by Santa Barbara guard Shawn Whilt. Oxnard was awarded the ball under the Dons' basket, and Curtis was fouled to set up the game-winning free throws. Santa Barbara (6-2) missed several shots on its final two possessions, including a 15-foot jumper by Dominique Ingerson with five seconds left and a running jumper in the lane by Whilt that bounced off the rim at the buzzer. Curtis finished with 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. All-tournament selection Matt Merricks led the Yellowjackets with 17 points, including five three-pointers, but fouled out with 2:07 to play. Ingerson led the Dons with 26 points. Brent Williams and Trey Putnam had 12 each. Oxnard (7-1) outscored Santa Barbara 18-11 in the fourth quarter.Ingerson scored a game-high 26 points.

Harvard Westlake v. Thousand Oaks--The third-place game between Harvard-Westlake and Thousand Oaks was canceled because of time constraints (the prior game ran late, and H-W had it's semiformal dance scheduled for Saturday night, and if the game had been played, the team would miss the dance, and, equally important, the Championship game would not have started until 9:30 p.m.)
Fifth Place
Grant 62, Oak Park 39--Mike Charleston, an all-tournament selection, had 15 points and seven assists for Grant (4-1) in the fifth-place game. Grant's Krishna Evans scored 10 points and Brian Guevara had nine points. Jeremy Murphy, an all-tournament selection, scored 22 points for the Eagles (3-2).

Tournament of Champions at Ocean View
Championship
Mater Dei 63, Compton Centennial 53--Jamal Sampson had 19 points and 14 rebounds, Cedric Bozeman scored 13 and Steve Scoggin had 11 for Mater Dei. [Excerpted from the OC Register] Twice in the fourth quarter of the Tournament of Champions final, Compton Centennial cut a Mater Dei advantage to six. And twice, Monarch coach Gary McKnight called timeout and told his team the same message. Get the ball to the Big Man. His troops dutifully took the ball to the paint, and 6-foot-11 junior center Jamal Sampson, a.k.a. the Big Man, pulled the Monarchs from the fire and led them, with some help from guard Steve Scoggin, to a 63-53 victory over the Apaches to capture the 1999 Tournament of Champions title at Ocean View High on Saturday night. Sampson, the nephew of former NBA All-Star Ralph Sampson, finished with 19 points and 14 rebounds despite missing more than a quarter due to foul trouble. He easily claimed tournament MVP honors. The night began as so many have through the years for the Monarchs, as their stifling defense and constant movement on offense built a 17-5 first quarter advantage over the cold-shooting Apaches. All-tournament performer Cedric Bozeman keyed the onslaught with a pair of three-pointers, while free-throw shooting or the lack thereof plagued Centennial, who hit only 2 of 9 in the first half, and 10 of 23 for the game. But the Apaches, trailing 34-15 at halftime, came alive in the third quarter behind forwards Ellis Myles and Jamaal Barnes, outscoring Mater Dei 20-11 in the period to stay in the game. Myles' lay-up cut the lead to 47-41 with 5:50 to play, and McKnight called the first of the two timeouts. Steve Scoggin, another Mater Dei All-tournament selection, responded to the coach's call to get Sampson involved, driving inside on an Apache defense collapsing on the center. Scoggin drew a foul and hit an off-balance jumper, building the lead back up to nine. Myles helped Centennial close to 50-44, prompting the second McKnight timeout, but Sampson took charge on the offensive boards, gathering rebounds on three consecutive crucial Monarch possessions, all of which yielded points. He then supplied the game's coup de grace, a beautiful pass to Mike Strawberry, whose layup gave Mater Dei a decisive 59-47 lead with 2:25 to play.
