[Note: These are the program notes we wrote for the Official Best in the West Program. We know for a fact that many of the team profiles were edited to save space in the program. So, we thought we'd at least make some use of the original material by posting it up here. Additionally, with some of these teams, we've already done previews here at SoCalHoops, and where they exist, we'll link to them. |
Morningside HS (Inglewood, CA): Morningside competes in Division III, in the very competitive Bay League, and last year they finished 13-14 and lost in the first round of the playoffs to Harvard-Westlake. We previewed the team last season, and while we've spoken to Coach Franklin about this year's team and the new players, not much has really changed with coach Carl Franklin except that he's even more determined this year to do well with an improved squad. And with a more competitive combined division (no III-A or III-AA, just a single division) Coach Franklin is glad that he's returning most of his excellent scoring talent from last year's team. The Monarchs are led by Dwayne Trotter (6'-5" Sr. F), a good shooter and active defender, Ricky Rico (6'-7" Sr. C), a highly regarded offensive threat, Tracy Cathey (6'-0" Sr. G), an athletic and agile shooter with good hops, and Daniel Campbell (5'-11" Jr. PG/SG) who is an excellent ballhander. Dante Tatum (6'-4" Jr. F) also returns, and he can shoot the three and create off the dribble. Others to watch are Marcus Calcote (6'-0" Jr. G), Thomas Stevenson (5'-10" Sr. G) Steve Carr (5'-8" Sr. PG), all good backcourt players, while Marlon Brisco (6'-4" So. C/F) a transfer from Antelope Valley, provides solid depth up front. Guards like Martell Waller (6'-1" Jr. G) and forwards Darryn Gilliam (6'-3" Jr. F), Chris Jackson (6'-2" Jr. F), Khali Young (6'-3" Jr. SF), Praise Adiakosa (6'-2" Jr. F), are all solid and will see some action as will Derrick Fletcher (5'-9" Jr. G), the likely backup at the point.
