[Note: These are the program notes we wrote for the Official Best in the West Program. We know for a fact that many of the team profiles were edited to save space in the program. So, we thought we'd at least make some use of the original material by posting it up here. Additionally, with some of these teams, we've already done previews here at SoCalHoops, and where they exist, we'll link to them. |
Canyon Springs HS (Moreno Valley, CA): Coach Jeff Stovall has compiled back to back 20-win seasons, and he's looking for a shot at a Southern Section Division I-AA title this season with a quick, talented team which features one of the most highly touted freshmen in the country, Richard Cobbs (6'-5" Fr. SG/SF) who is currently averaging 25 ppg in his first varsity season. Other starters are Jason Braxton (6'-3' Jr. PG), a tough and dazzling ballhandler who has great size for a point and excellent court vision. Backing up Braxton will be Alfonso James (5'-9" So. PG) and Daniel Azcona (6'-0" Sr. SG/PG). Chuck Gibson (6'-2" Sr. SG) is an underrated shooter who is getting a lot of D-II attention; he'll be backed at the two by Leon Rosborough (6'-3" So. SG/SF). Up front Chad Rosson (6'-7" Sr. C), is a big player with speed, a shotblocker who will be joined by Brandon Jones (6'-8" Jr. C). Paul Johnson (5'-11' Jr. SG/SF), a transfer from JW North, will see some time at the two, as will Ryan Basco (65'-11' Sr. SG/SF), and Dyron Walker (6'-1" Sr. SF/SG), who has great hops and a good shot. Others who may see time at the three or four will be Jason Brown (6'-4" Sr. SF/PF), a strong player to the hoop, Marcus Carver (6'-4" Jr. SF/PF) primarily a football player, Howard Taylor (6'-1" Sr. SF), a versatile shooter and utility guy, and Bryant Robinson (6'-0" SG/SF) an inside-outside threat.
