Calvin Afualo Commits
To LMU--(December 30, 1999)

One of the benefits of being up in Santa Maria for the Allan Hancock JUCO Tournament (that's a benefit?) is that we managed to catch up with a lot of the really good high school seniors from last June's graduating class who, for one reason or another didn't sign with any D-I schools out of high school; for some it was grades, for others, the SAT, for some a combination of the two, and for others, well, they just didn't get recruited that highly and even though they were full qualifiers, decided to go the JC route to see if they could improve their recruiting.

One of those in the latter category is Calvin Afualo (6'-1" Fr. SG) from Etiwanda HS, who is currently playing for coach Nerses Kopalyan at Chaffey College.  We were staying at the same hotel as the Chaffey team (and College of Sequoias, which had one of the worst collapses in recent memory, blowing a 22 point lead and the game in the finals last night), so we managed to get a little bit of inside recruiting information, and Nerses told us that Calvin has committed to the Lions for next year.

Calvin is a stocky, strong shooter with deadly accuracy, and according to Nerses, he was a full qualifier out of high school, but didn't get recruited, so he decided to come to Chaffey for a year.  According to Nerses, he'll  be immediately eligible next season (since he was already a qualifier out of high school, he doesn't have to sit out a year).  Calvin should be able to come in and be a big impact player for the Lions.  We saw him hit four threes yesterday and had his teammates played a little less selfishly (JUCO ball, for those who haven't seen a lot of it, often resembles some of the summer stuff, at least among a lot of teams), and given him the ball more, Chaffey probably would have beaten Cuesta College.
