SoCalHoops Tournament News
Loyola & USDHS At Father
Berry Classic--(Dec. 14, 1999)
We don't have all the details of what transpired up at Carmichael Jesuit HS this past weekend, but we do know that the 26th Annual Father Berry Christmas Classic took place again this year, hosted as it has been for the previous 25 by Jesuit. Two teams from SoCal made it up for the tournament, which also featured some of the NorCal area's best boys' Catholic high school teams, including Brophy from Phoenix, Arizona, Christian Brothers from Sacramento, Carmichael Jesuit, San Francisco St. Ignatius, Stockton St. Mary's and Sacred Heart from up in the Sac-Jaoquin area.
Those two from SoCal didn't make it to the Championship game, and USDHS didn't get to win this for the third time (at least we've been told they've won it twice before with Luke, Kam and Chris Walton all on the team), but the Dons and Los Angeles Loyola did get to play for the Consolation Championship (which in an 8 team tournament would mean they were playing for 5th?) In any event, we don't have many details, but we do know that USDHS won, beating Loyola 60-53. High scorers for the Dons were Nate Staggs (6'-0" Sr. F) with 16, Kam Walton (6'-8" Sr. PF) with 14 and Chris Walton (6'-9" Sr. F) 12 points. For Loyola, as we expected Shawn Crosner (6'-6" Jr. C) had 20 and Matt Llewelyn (6'-2" So. SG) scored 16 points. Two days before coming up to Sacramento for this tournament, Llewellyn had a 26 point game, and he must have really been racking up the points for the Cubs.
Based on their overall tournament performances, Chris Walton and Nate Staggs of USDHS were selected to the All-Tournament team, as was Loyola's Matt Llewellyn, one of only two sophomores selected to the All-Tourney team. Don't sleep on Matt because he's going to impress a lot of people by the time he's a senior.
