Glendora Triple Crown:
A Different View Of SB v. Mater Dei--(Dec. 2, 1999)
Last night, our friend, sometime summer travel partner, co-coach, and infrequent correspondent Lee Garson took the trip out to Glendora to report on the Glendora Triple Crown games, and he managed to get two out of three of the scores, one of which was the Santa Barbara v. Glendora game. Just for the sake of comparison with our own report and in the interest of completeness (and a completely accurate box score) here's what the Santa Barbara News-Press had to say about the game:
Transfer helps Dons give Mater Dei a battle
12/2/99NEWS-PRESS STAFF REPORT
GLENDORA -- After receiving the news that talented transfer Dommanic Ingerson was eligible to play, the Santa Barbara High boys basketball team went out and battled the No. 1 team in the state down to the wire Wednesday night. The Dons were beaten by powerful Mater Dei, 70-61, at the Triple Crown Challenge, but they demonstrated they're a team to reckoned with this season."What was very encouraging for us, was we were able to see that we can play with best team in state," Santa Barbara coach Jeff Lavender said. "We came away from this game thinking, 'If we do some things different we can beat those guys.' '' It helped Santa Barbara's cause that the CIF ruled Ingerson eligible to play. His playing status was in doubt until Wednesday afternoon. Ingerson transfered to Santa Barbara from McClymonds High in Oakland during the summer.
"We heard from the CIF in the nick of time to play the No. 1 team in California," said Lavender. Ingerson, a 6-3 junior guard, scored 17 points --15 in the second quarter -- before fouling out. "He brought us back in the game," Lavender said. Ingerson caught Mater Dei's attention. The Monarchs changed their defense to a box-and-one to contain him. That and foul problems slowed Ingerson for the rest of the game.
Brent Williams picked up the scoring slack and finished as the Dons' leading scorer with 18 points. "Brent really carried us in the second half," Lavender noted. "He was 10-of-10 from the free throw line." The Dons used a lot of screens to free up Williams. "We had our big guys set screens so (Mater Dei's) 6-10 and 6-11 guys would come outside and foul him," Lavender explained.
The Dons (1-1) never led in the game, but they did tie it midway through the fourth quarter. They were forced to foul the rest of the way. Mater Dei attempted 43 free throws and made 26. Jamal Sampson, the 6-11 nephew of former NBA star Ralph Sampson, led Mater Dei with 18 points. "He's the best thing I've ever seen," said Lavender. The Santa Barbara coach praised the play of Sean Whilt, who had seven assists and played well at the defensive end.
