Glendora Triple Crown:
Two Thirds Of Results--(Dec. 1, 1999)

Our friend, sometime summer travel partner, co-coach, and infrequent correspondent Lee Garson took the trip tonight out to Glendora (we had committed ourselves to watching yet another D-V game, Montclair Prep v. Milken, the latter of which has now been moved up to Division IV-A from V-AA due to increased enrollment. . . more on that game later though), and Lee told us he saw some pretty good basketball tonight. This is going to be just a rough report from what he told us from his cell phone, but it's better than waiting for the local papers to get it to us. . . actually the papers do a great job, and without their terrific prep coverage, we'd be lost (or at least there'd be a big hole in what's known as the Inland Valley area).  But back to the games played tonight at Glendora. There were three, and we've got results in two of them:

Game 1:  Nogales 60, Ocean View 76

This was a game which started out close, but then just got away from Nogales.  Marques Crane (6'-4" Jr. SG/SF) hit for 23 points, including 2 three pointers.  Marques sort of served as a bookend in this game, getting most of his points in the first (11) and the 4th (7) quarters.  He played well, pushed the ball and scored by attacking the basket.  Ryan Westbrook (6'-5" Sr. SG) also played well, hitting for 16 points, and Jeremiah Bell scored 18 points, including 8 int he first quarter.  For Nogales, Ron Quinine had 14 points, Mark Pagdillio and Aaron Boyd both had 12 points, Antoine Chandler 9 and John Chen had 11.   Nogales had very balanced scoring, just not enough of it as Ocean View slowly and steadily pulled away. At the end of the first quarter, Ocean View led 17-14, and at the half it was 37-33 Ocean View.  The Seahawks extended the lead just a bit more in the third, and at the end of the quarter, they led 51-45.  Ocean View extended the lead even further in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Nobles 25-15 in the quarter, but it didn't just come smoothly.  At one point, early in the fourth quarter, Ocean View was up only 56-53, but they then outscored Nogales 20-7, and Nogales was never able to pull it close again.

Game 2:  Mater Dei 70,  Santa Barbara 61

The big news here was not who won, but who started for the respective teams:  No surprises with Mater Dei, and Gary McKnight started the usual suspects:  Ricky Porter, Cedric Bozeman, Steve Scoggin, Jamal Sampson and Erik Soderberg.  Nope, no news there.

The really big news was that Santa Barbara was able to start Dommanic Ingerson (6'-3" Jr. SG), who was ruled eligible to play today by the CIF Southern Section office.  And Dommanic played well until he fouled out  with just over 4 minutes to play in the fourth quarter, with the score 54-48, Santa Barbara trailing.  But Dommanic didn't just come out and stand around, he picked up 17 points, not a game high, but it definitely helped keep the Dons in this one.

In addition to Dommanic, Santa Barbara also started Shawn Whilt, Charlie Peterson,  Trey Putnam, and Brent Williams, and it was Williams free throw shooting which also kept Santa Barbara in this one up until late in the fourth quarter, and he finished with 18 points, including going 10-10 from the freethrow line. In fact, Santa Barbara's shooting from the line was remarkable, and they made 19 out of 21 free throws in the the game.

The game started out with Mater Dei getting the tip and Dommanic immediately spraining his ankle on the first play where he fouled Bozeman, but neither of them was hurt too badly, and Dommanic continued to play, but didn't score in the first quarter at all, and it wasn't until 6:38 remaining in the second quarter that Ingerson finally scored his first field goal. But once he did, he scored in a variety of ways, slashing to the basket, on pull up jumpers and playing very well.  Following that first basket, which made it 18-13, Santa Barbara went on a little mini-run, or at least Dommanic did, and he scored 7 of the next 8 straight points to give Santa Barbara the lead 21-18.  But Mater Dei eventually brought the game back under control, and at the half, the Monarchs led 34-31.

And for those interested in how Bozeman looked, the assessment was "alright, not great, but he played."  Ok, well, it's better than being injured and not playing.  Let's just hope he can stay healthy throughout the season.  Cedric finished with 7 points and a bunch of assists before fouling out. Harrison Schaen, the young but extremely talented freshman, only saw limited action, about 2:30 in al in the first half.  We're pretty sure though that by the middle of the season, McKnight will start to work Harrison into the lineup so that he sees more playing time.

Early in the third quarter, Santa Barbara tied it at 36-36 with a baseline jumper by Ingerson, but then Sampson followed with two authoritative dunks to make it 40-36.  Dommanic then picked up his fourth foul of the game  midway through the third quarter and had to sit. With about 55 seconds remaining in the quarter, Scoggin hit a three to make it 50-44, which was the score at the end of the quarter. Scoggin had seven points in the quarter, and Santa Barbara's Brent Williams had 9 of 13 in the quarter including going 6-6 form the line, and a three pointer.

In the fourth quarter,  with Dommanic back in, Santa Barbara closed the gap to two points, 50-48, but then there was a sort of wierd series of plays: On a made layup by Bozeman, he was fouled by a Santa Barbara player, but then a technical was called, so Bozeman went to the line, and hit one of three.  On the next play, Mater Dei got the ball because of the technical, and Sampson was fouled, and he too only made one of two, meaning that of all those opportunities to put the game away, Mater Dei only came away with four points, to make the score 54-48.  Sampson then awoke, and got fouled again on another layup, and it was Ingerson's fifth foul.  Sampson made the free throw and then slammed home another dunk to make it 59-48, and Santa Barbara never really got any closer than 7 after that, although they had their chances.

We don't have the final scoring for everyone, but Lee managed to get most of it.  For Mater Dei,  Jamal Sampson 20, Steve Scoggin 17, Erik Soderberg 9, Cedric Bozeman 7 (there were more scorers, but we don't have the rest);   For Santa Barbara, Brent Williams 18,  Dommanic Ingerson 17, Trey Putnam 9, and KC Wallings 7.

A great game, between two very talented and athletic teams, and it's a sort of preview of what might be with both of these teams in Division I-A for playoff purposes according to the latest CIF Division information.
