Tournament Scores--(Dec. 5, 1999)
We've tried to get as many of the scores and details of games taking place all over the SoCal area as possible from yesterday, and we think we've gotten most of them. If you know of a score or a result we missed, send us an e-mail, or post it up on the message board. For the tournaments, they're organized alphabetically by the name of the tournament; for non-league games, the best we can do is organize them alphabetically using the first letter of the winning team.
Note also that we will continuously update this page throughout the day following the games, so if you don't see a score, check back later. . .

Buchanan-Clovis West Tournament
Championship Game
Clovis West 68, Ayala 66 (OT)-- (From the Fresno Bee):
Semifinal: Clovis West 86, Compton Dominguez 79 (OT)
Stunning title run for Clovis West
By Lisa Burnett
(Published December 5, 1999)
The championship was scheduled for 8:30 p.m., but the game of the day occurred much earlier in the Kiwanis BCW Hoop Invitational. In a 12:30 p.m. Gold Division semifinal at Buchanan High, Clovis West stunned Dominguez of Compton, ranked No. 1 in the state, 86-79 in overtime. For good measure, the Golden Eagles edged Ayala of Chino Hills 68-66 in overtime in the championship game of the 28-team tournament. Though Clovis West coach Vance Walberg and some of his players said the Dominguez win would be meaningless without a follow-up victory in the championship, the semifinal upset was momentous.
The Dons, ranked No. 5 in one national poll, led by 15 points early in the fourth quarter and were ahead 71-58 with just more than 5 minutes left. But the Golden Eagles, ranked No. 8 in the state, scored the next 13 points to tie the game for the first time. Then, after exchanging baskets, scored the first nine points in overtime en route to victory. "They executed and did the little things better," Dominguez coach Russell Otis said. "They just played better basketball then we did." But, Otis said, the difference in the game was clearly the play of Eagles point guard Chris Hernandez. "We had no answer for him. Nobody on our team can guard him. We had nobody who could contain him," Otis said. "He's the real deal. He's the best point guard we've ever played. He can flat out play.
"You put Chris Hernandez on our team, and we are national champions." Hernandez, a 6-foot 2-inch junior, played almost the entire game and kept Clovis West in it against the bigger, stronger and more talented Dons with his tenacious play and his never-say-die attitude. He finished with a game-high 32 points, including nine in overtime. "I was getting tired, but Andrew Awad and Anthony Aiello stepped up, and that got me back up again," Hernandez said. The victory, despite coming in December, has to rank amongst the biggest for the Clovis West program. "It's definitely one of the nice ones - beating a program as quality as they are," Walberg said. The Dons looked to make a rout of it early, charging to a 16-4 lead and holding a 29-13 advantage at the end of the first quarter. But Clovis West closed to three points midway through the second quarter.
Getting outstanding defensive play from Awad, a senior guard, and inspired reserve play from senior forward Aiello, the Eagles kept it close until halftime, when Dominguez had a 43-34 lead. But the Dons scored the first six points of the second half then kept Clovis West at a distance into the fourth quarter. Sherman Gay's shot from the left wing put Dominguez ahead 71-58 before the Eagles' game-tying rally. The Eagles trapping defense caused numerous turnovers and forward Charlie Rodriguez, a 6-7 sophomore who struggled early in his matchup with Dominguez's 7-0 center Tyson Chandler, found his game at a crucial time. Rodriguez grabbed some timely rebounds and scored 13 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter, including 11 as the Eagles rallied from a 67-52 deficit to tie the score for the first time at 71-71 with 3:03 left in regulation.
Rodriguez, his Spanish translated by assistant coach Jose Hernandez, said he came in intimidated but that he was inspired by Walberg's halftime talk. "He told me, 'It's time to play. Play like a man,'" Rodriguez said. "That was another key - Charlie turned it around in the fourth quarter," Chris Hernandez said. After Clovis West tied it at 71-71 on a rebound putback by Rodriguez, Dominguez retook the lead on a basket by Micah McKinney with 1:53 left. Rodriguez answered with an inside basket to tie it at 73-73 with 1:21 left, and neither team scored again in regulation. Rodriguez gave the Eagles a quick lead in overtime with a rebound putback. Then, with 2:07 left in the 4-minute overtime period, Hernandez hit a 3-pointer from the left wing to put Clovis West up 80-73. Hernandez made two free throws with 1:49 left and two more with 58.5 seconds left before the Dons scored their first points of overtime on Darius Sanders' driving shot.
Hernandez made 6 of 6 free throws (excluding a miss on a lane violation) in overtime. "They just don't quit," Walberg said of his players. "When you don't quit, you always give yourself a chance. "When you have somebody like Chris Hernandez, he won't let you quit." Aiello scored 12 points and Awad eight for the Eagles. Steve Moore led Dominguez with 14. Chandler had just six points.
In the championship, Hernandez scored 25 points,
including 6 of 6 free throws in overtime. He made 10 of 10 free throws in the game, picked
up tournament MVP honors, then headed for the shower to clean up for the winter formal.
"I'm dead. I don't even know if I'll dance at the formal," said
Hernandez, obviously drained after leading the Eagles to the championship. "It was a
dog fight. We got through it.
We didn't execute, but we pulled it out."

Bakersfield 78, Washington Union 73
Alfred Williams says he plays better in big games. Friday night, the Bakersfield High guard played in a doozy at the Kiwanis BCW Hoop Invitational. Williams was obviously up for the Drillers' quarterfinal matchup against Washington, ranked No. 9 in the state. He scored 33 points and led Bakersfield, ranked No. 17 in the state, to a 78-73 upset of the defending Division 3 state champions in a Gold Division game at Buchanan. "I get very happy when it's against a team like that," Williams said, referring to the Panthers, who have earned national recognition. "Big game, people all over, it just makes me want to play harder. It just boosts my energy. I never get tired." The Drillers senior didn't appear tired as he helped hand Bakersfield coach Mark Hutson his 401st career victory. Hutson became the first Central Section coach to reach 400 career victories Thursday. "That's the biggest game I've ever had," Williams said. "It seems like we just won Valley section title." Behind Williams' 20 points, Bakersfield led 39-27 with 1 minute 47 seconds left in the first half. Washington scored the next 11 points, including the first five of the second half. The Panthers took the lead for the first time on two free throws and a basket by DeShawn Anderson with 5:30 left in the third quarter. An inside basket by Kansas-bound DeShawn Stevenson gave the Panthers their last lead of the game at 65-62 with 4:38 to go. But C.J. Black scored six of his eight points in the final four minutes to help preserve the Bakersfield lead. "We just didn't play very well. We didn't do anything very well," Washington coach Larry Triguiero said. "I'm not taking anything away from them, but we just didn't play very well. "We're a championship-caliber team, but we're a long way from that right now." Jason Jackson dominated the boards for Bakersfield, grabbing 17 rebounds. Johnny Wiley had 18 points and Mark Bruley 10 for the Drillers. "We played together," Williams said. "We kept our heads in it. I felt very confident because we got a lot of good players."
Ayala 53, Long Beach Poly 56
Washington plays fifth-ranked Long Beach Poly today in a game that figured to be a Gold Division semifinal instead of a consolation matchup. But Poly, ranked fifth in the state, also was upset - 56-53 by Ayala.
Clovis West 78, Inglewood 59
Eighth-ranked Clovis West remained on the winners' side of the Gold Division with a 78-59 rout of Inglewood. Four players scored in double figures for the Golden Eagles, led by Chris Hernandez with 17. Tyrone Jackson and Andrew Awad each had 15, and Charlie Rodriguez scored 14 for the Eagles. Clovis West faces top-ranked Dominguez (Compton) in today's semifinals.
Sylmar 75, Clovis 62--In the bronze division, Clovis jumped to a 20-14 first-quarter lead against Sylmar but eventually fell 75-62. Sylmar outscored the Cougars, who had three starters and two reserves playing in the Central Section Yosemite Division-Large Schools football championship.
Pacific Palisades 58, Buchanan 46
Buchanan lost to Pacific Palisades 58-46 despite 27 points from Justin Perry.

J.W. North Tournament
Championship Game
Rialto 77, JW North 62 --Rialto figured Riverside North would make a run. When the run came, the Knights weathered it. The Huskies, trailing 66-48 with 5:10 to play, sliced Rialto's lead to 69-62 with 1:23 left. But the Knights shut out host North the rest of the way to capture the North Tournament championship with a 77-62 victory in front of about 800 spectators on Saturday night. Rialto (4-0) takes on San Gorgonio in the first round of the Rialto-Eisenhower Tournament at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Rialto. The tourney runs through Thursday. What the Knights had been doing until the North charge came was using their superior quickness to get inside for good shots, hit some timely shots from outside and frustrate the Huskies (4-1) with their defense. After Isaiah Bryant's rebound basket cut the Rialto lead to 69-62, the Knights put the clamps back on, and North missed three three-point tries. Joiner, the tournament's MVP, scored nine second-quarter points, and forward Daniel Burnett poured in 13 as Rialto turned what had been a 16-16 game at the end of the first quarter into a 43-31 halftime lead. Joiner scored just six points after intermission, but he did make three important free throws in the final minute. The Knights sealed the victory by making eight of their last 10 foul shots. Burnett helped the Knights preserve the victory by scoring 10 points in the second half. He wound up with a game-high 25 points, while Joiner had 17. Marques Davis put in six of his 11 points in the second half. North went on a 14-3 run to climb back in the game after being down 18 points with 5:10 to go. Micah Anderson did most of the damage during the Huskies spurt with 10 points. He finished with a team-high 14 points. Bryant added 12 points, while center Lionel Dixon put in 10 . Perong figured his team would be in good shape if "we were ahead by 10, 12 points when they started their run." The Knights were up 18 when the Huskies rally started. After the Huskies drew to within 69-62, the Knights righted themselves. Burnett and Joiner made two free throws each to increase Rialto's margin to 73-62 with 53 seconds left, and North was finished when it couldn't connect on its three-pointers.
