48th Annual Pacific Shores
Tournament
Semifinal Results--(Dec. 3, 1999)
The final is now set: Redondo Union will play Bishop Montgomery in the Championship game at the 48th Annual Pacific Shores Tournament this Saturday night. The game will get going at 7:30 p.m. and will be preceded by the third place game between Fairfax and Mayfair which will take place at 6:00 p.m.. Both games will be at Redondo Union High School (see maps below).
We went out to Redondo Union last night to see some of the best talent in SoCal, and we weren't alone, as half the Pac-10 coaches where also there: UCLA's Steve Lavin and Jim Saia, USC's Silvey Dominguez, Stanford's Tony Fuller, and a bunch of other coaches from all over SoCal, from D-I to NAIA and JUCOs. And they were there for two absolutely huge matches featuring some of the best talent in town. Fairfax, the City Championship runners-up last year, against D-III favorites Bishop Montgomery, featuring the Craven twins, Errick and Derrick, which started at 6:00 p.m. and a second game between Mayfair (featuring two of the hottest recruits in Josh Childress and Edwin Draughan) against Redondo Union, (featuring Andrew Zahn, Dylan Mathis, Dijon Thompson and Ryan Mollins, among others) which got going at 7:30 p.m.
While we were there and will add our own commentary about what we saw last night later (when we get a chance to come up for air), we did get another report from John Tawa, who writes for a local paper, The EasyReader, whohad this to say:
Redondo and Bishop Montgomery advance to Pac Shores finals
Redondo 65, Mayfair 59
Senior leadership was the difference down the stretch for the Sea Hawks who took the lead early in the third quarter and never relinquished it, despite very strong play from the Monsoons. Andrew Zahn turned in what Redondo coach Jim Nielsen called an "All-American" performance with 19 point and 15 rebounds. But for those of us who cover Redondo, it was just another typical strong Zahn game, the kind of quality play we see night in and night out from the big guy. Zahn also dished out five assists, which must have pleased UCLA coach Steve Lavin, who was in attendance along with representatives from many other Pac-10 schools. Not many know how adept a passer Zahn is. He had 15 assists in a Pac Shores game last year versus Pacifica.
The entire Redondo team played well in the game. Walter White overcame a nagging ankle injury to post 14 points, many during key stretches when it looked like Mayfair was going to seize the lead. Dijon Thompson had another brilliant game. The 6-6 junior point guard outplayed the more acclaimed Mayfair guard Josh Childress, outscoring him 19 to 12, and playing another solid floor game. Ryan Mollins was shut out in this one, but his defense on Childress was a key to the win. Finally, the underappreciated Dylan Mathis played one of his best games ever, coming down with key rebounds, feeding the post for easy buckets, playing under control and hitting a big layup down the stretch off of a nice feed from Thompson.
The Monsoons, who played much better than their effort a night earlier against Morningside, got balanced scoring Edwin Draughan, who was impressive with his slashes to the hoop, Chris Pittman, Childress and Jeff Bonds. They each scored between 12 and 14 points. Redondo will play Bishop Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the final.
Bishop Montgomery 72, Fairfax 59
The Knights simply outquicked their taller Fairfax opponents in recording the 72-59 win. Derrick Craven was Mr. Outside, scoring 25 points, to lead Bishop. Errick Craven and Brian Pruitt added 15 apiece. Fairfax was led by the graceful 6-8 sophomore Evan Burns who had 25 points. Jason Morrissette, who sat out the first quarter for unknown reasons, finished with 8 points. Fairfax and Mayfair battle in the consolation game Saturday at 6 p.m. at Redondo.
"I thought the crowd was great," said Redondo coach Jim Nielsen. "It just shows that the Shores is back!"
