Valencia Winter Slam Tournament
Semifinal Schedule & Notes--(Dec. 18, 1998)

Here's today's schedule.  We're down to the semifinals of the tournament, and there will also be a bunch of consolation games:

Semifinals:

6:00 p.m. Alemany v. Hollywood
7:30 p.m. Quartz Hill v. Chatsworth

Consolation games:

3:00 p.m. Birmingham v. Compton Centennial
3:00 p.m. San Fernando v. Santa Paula
4:30 p.m. Royal v. Antelop Valley
4:30 p.m. Eisenhower v. Chaminade
5:30 p.m. Littlerock v. Valencia
7:00 p.m. Ventura v. Notre Dame

Valencia High has two gyms, a main and auxiliary, and the 3:00 p.m. and 4:30 games will be running side-by-side, so you'll really have to pick and choose.

There were no games yesterday, so there's nothing new to report on from actual game play. But if you're out in Valencia or anywhere near there, you'll want to get a look at the 6:00 p.m. game because both Alemany and Hollywood are excellent teams this year, and we personally think the Sheiks are going to surprise more than a few City Section teams, with players like Leon Robbins (6'-5" Jr. PG/SG/SF), Eric Hall (6'-5" Sr. PF) Gerald Collins (5'-9" So. PG), Orville Allen (6'-2" Jr. SG), Vahe Melikian (6'-0" Sr. PF), Kenny Johnson (6'-2" Sr. SG), Richard Wright (6'-0" So. SG), Jamaal Simpson (6'-0" Sr. SG), Keilon Maddox (6'-0" So. SG), Craig Banks (6'-2" Sr. SG), and Jamond Netters (5'-10" Sr. G).   Likewise, Alemany is going to shock more than a couple of its traditional Mission League rivals, teams that have been stomping them for years, now that they've got a new and improved Casey Claussen, and the rest of the guys playing football, including Devin Montgomery, Reggie Kinlaw, Bryson Atkins, Marco Pantoja, and Derrick Goodman

And as for Chatsworth v. Quartz Hill, we don't know much about Quartz Hill, but we do know the guys over at Chatsworth, and you'll want to make it over to see Mark Cannon (6'-0" Sr. PG), Richard Harrison (6'-5" Sr. PF/SF), Adam Drell (6'-6" Jr. PF), and Ronald Ruffin (6'-6" Sr. PF) take on the Quartz Hill team.  And as the LA Times put it in their regional Boys' Basketball Notebook in today's edition of the Valley/Ventura County Sports Section:

Coach Fluke Fluker of Chatsworth has an answer for those surprised at the Chancellors' 56-42 upset victory Wednesday night over No. 2 Chaminade in the Valencia tournament.  "The only Fluke in that game was the coach," he said. "Our guys are sick and tired of the Rodney Dangerfield label about not getting any respect.  They wanted to make a statement.

Richard Harrison, Adam Drell and Ronald Ruffin held 6'-9" Scott Borchart of Chaminade to 11 points.  "All of thos guys are 6'-6" and lift weights every day," Fluker said. [Hey coach, get out that tape measure, because if Harrison is 6'-6", he's wearing those thick-soled Reeboks UCLA wore last year.].  "I think Borchart has seen enough orange and blue for a lifetime."
