Upland's Midland Texas Tourney Update--(Dec. 28, 1998)
We got the following report this evening via e-mail and thought we'd share it:
This is Jeff Klein writing from Midland. Great Tournament ...awesome arena on the campus of Midland JC.....where we ran into ex-Manuel Arts star Ricky Duff. Who is playing at Midland JC. The first day is complete with these results:
South Garland 45, El Paseo Bel Air 42 (winning three at the buzzer)
Upland 54, Amarillo 45
Texas A&M Consolidated 82 , Colony (Alaska) 67
Midland 92, Midland Lee 61
**** Midland star Charles Tatum is the real deal..........6 for 6 three pointers in the first half........awesome talent Nolan Richardson has a great one.
Upland came from behind in the first half to take a 20 -18 lead at the half. Amarillo scored the first 8 points of the 3rd quarter to take a six point lead. Upland inserted a smaller pressing line up and outscored Amarillo 16-2 to close out the 3rd quarter with a 36-28 lead. Upland led by Matt Santos (16 points and 9 assists controlled the 4th quarter with excellent defense.) Desmond Penigar finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Desmond and Upland's other tri towers DeMarcus Williams , Jason Johnson, and Steven Hamilton limited the effectiveness of Amarillo's star Josh Faltesak (New Mexico) who scored 15 points but fouled out late in the 4th quarter.Upland plays Texas A&M Consolidated at 5:15 on 12/29 Midland plays South Garland in the other semi final.
This tournament is top billing from the print media, t.v. , fan support......the last game had over 4,000 spectators. Only show in town.
