Ocean View Tournament Of Champions:
Mater Dei Wins Championship--(Dec. 12, 1998)
We weren't there, because we were at Pauley Pavilion watching the Bruins play UNLV (more on that shortly) but we did catch this message from WestCoastHoops' reader Jack Nelson posted over on their Fan Forum:
In the finals of the Tournament of Champions in Huntington Beach which were moved up to 1:30 P.M. so that Mater Dei coaches, players and fans could attend tonights Div 1 championship football game at Edison International Field of Anaheim between Mater Dei and Long Beach Poly the Monarchs broke loose for 28 4th qtr points to upend the Compton Tarbabes 69-63 .Tournament MVP Mike Bayer led the Monarchs with 19 points. The Monarchs trailed by 40-29 midway thry 3rd period before cutting the lead to 46-41 going into 4th qtr. and outscored Tarbabes 28-17 in final period to win going away.
Guess we'll have to wait for the morning papers for more details on the rest of the games.
Oh, and we do have some corrections to note:
Our earlier report of the Horizon v. Mater Dei game from last night had an error in it: Wayne Bernard did not foul out. He played with only 3 fouls in the game, and didn't play in the post. Our bad. That was Ron Coleman, No. 44 (6'-8" Jr. C) who fouled out and who played in the post most of the evening. We will add though that without Coleman in the game, Horizon was pretty much without any real answers inside, and his 5th foul marked the beginning of their scoring drought in the fourth quarter.
Also, another correction from a game earlier in the week, the Crenshaw v. AB Miller game, which was the first game played in the tournament on Monday at 4:20 p.m. at Mater Dei. We prefaced our report by saying we hadn't seen it, and then wrote that Crenshaw won by "about 34 points" or something like that. But then we got this e-mail tonight from coach John Romagnoli of A.B. Miller, setting the record straight:
Sorry you guys did not get an accurate report on this game. It was covered by the San Bernardino Sun Telegram [a paper we don't get here at SoCalHoops.] The score was not Crenshaw by 34-much to the contrary. Miller was down by just 8 points with three min to go when Crenshaw went on a 10-0 run to lock it up. Final was Crenshaw 90 Miller 67. Miller does not start a kid over 6'1" and they gave the big guys from Crenshaw all they could handle for 3 1/2 quarters....
