First & Second Round --(Dec. 10, 1998)
We are running way behind here, but we'll attempt to catch up. These are from Tuesday and Wednesday's games, but hey, better late than never. This tournament will run through Friday night and features eight teams, Oxnard, Thousand Oaks, Oak Park, Crespi, Highland Hall, Calabasas, Newbury Park and Harvard-Westlake
In first round action here's what happened:
Newbury Park 77, Oak Park 44--Nick Czernek scored 16 points and Brian Bobik added 12 for the Panthers (1-0), who took command early in a pool-play game in the Thousand Oaks tournament. Bobik also had six rebounds, seven steals and four assists. Oak Park (1-2) led 6-5, but Newbury Park went on a 13-1 run to close out the first quarter and never trailed again.
Crespi 93, Highland 61--Crespi took a 19-2 lead and breezed in the first round of the Thousand Oaks tournament. Marcin Jagoda and Tim McDonough each had 15 points to lead the Celts (1-0). Mike Luderer had 14 points. Mike Kennedy had 13 points for Highland (2-3).
Harvard-Westlake 59, Oxnard 47--The Wolverines were forced to play only guards, because really that's all that they have right now. Center Dan Kinzer (6'-8" Sr. C) is out indefinitely with a stress fracture to his hip. Alex Holmes (6'-3" Sr. PF), all 300 lbs of him, is still playing football, as is Spencer Torgan (6'-3" Jr. PF). So HW turned to outside shooting from guards Alex Minn and Russell Lakey, and forward Charles Gillig. Minn, a 6-2 senior, scored 14 points for Harvard-Westlake, 11 in the second half, including a 30-footer at the third-quarter buzzer to give HW a 38-31 lead. Minn sored four short jumpers in the fourth quarter to keep Oxnard (3-2) at bay. Oxnard led much of the first half and 25-22 at halftime. But the Yellowjackets made only three of 11 shots in the third quarter. Harvard-Westlake moved ahead to stay, 32-29, on Lakey's three-pointer midway through the third quarter. Damian Tafoya scored 15 points for Oxnard.
Thousand Oaks 78, Crespi 67--Kahil Fennel made four three-pointers, scored 16 points and the Lancers pulled away in the stretch. Crespi (1-1), with Tim McDonough scoring 14 points, stayed close for 3 1/2 quarters. Tim Chevalier scored 15 points, Jeff Hayne and Jason Furino each had 14 and Kyle Kegley added 12 for Thousand Oaks (5-1).
Highland 72, Calabasas 69--John Banks and Gerrome Clipper each scored 16 points in the Bulldogs' victory.
In Wednesday's second round pool play action:
Harvard-Westlake 61, Oak Park 39--Russell Lakey had seven points and six steals for the Wolverines in the win. Eric Geffner had seven points and 15 rebounds for Harvard-Westlake (3-0). Craig Weinstein (5'-10" Fr. PG/SG) also had 6 points and Chad Garson (6'-4" Jr. SG/SF) also scored 7 points.
