Tournament Soup, From A to T:
First Rounders--(Dec. 16, 1998)

We managed to piece together as many tournament reports as we could find, and here's what we have. It's arranged in alphabetical order, from A (Alhambra Tourney) to T (Troy Tournament).  We don't know a lot about any of these tournaments, but hey, some news is better than none, right.  We know these are not complete, so if anyone has details, let the rest of us in on them.  And if you're close by any of these tournaments, check them out and let us know what you see, either by e-mail or by posting it to the message board.  Have fun.


Alhambra Tournament Results From Tuesday--(Dec. 16, 1998)

Warren 78, Monrovia 41--Four starters, led by junior guard Curtis Williams' game-high 20 points, scored in double figures as the unbeaten Bears (7-0) rolled past the Wildcats in pool play action.  Warren senior forward Branko Kovacic finished with 16 points and teammates Robert Borg and Gray Reed combined for 26.


Azusa Tournament Results From Tuesday--(Dec. 13, 1998)

El Monte Moutain View 59, Boys Republic 36--Cecil Sagapolu scored 10 points, but the Rams fell to 2-3 with a pool play loss.


Boron Tournament Results From Tuesday--(Dec 16, 1998)

San Bernardino Aquinas 85, Antelope Valley Christian 81--Mike Rossi's driving layup with five seconds left lifted San Bernardino Aquinas to an 85-81 victory over Antelope Valley Christian Tuesday night in a first-round game of the Boron Tournament. Aquinas (3-0) led throughout and by 13 points (69-56) in the third quarter before getting into foul trouble. The Eagles rallied to tie the score at 81-81 with 12 seconds left. Aquinas spread the court and Rossi drove the lane and scored to make it 83-81. Antelope Valley Christian turned the ball over and Reggie Whitely hit two free throws to seal the victory.   Peter Bowden had 26 points for Antelope Valley Christian (4-2). Matthew Nurse had 25 points and Jamal Flanagan scored 23 also for AVC.

 


Dos Pueblos Tournament Result--(Dec. 16, 1998)

Maybe Dos Pueblos didn't play yesterday, maybe Shantay is going into hiding, or maybe Phil Sherman just didn't want to report all the scores, but this is all we've managed to find on this tournament.  And the result comes from the Santa Barbara News-Press, so if something happened up there yesterday, they usually have it.  Oh well, here's what we've got:

Thousand Oaks 73, San Marcos 73--Thousand Oaks (7-2) was paced by Tim Chevalier (16 points), Danny Lampert (14 and five rebounds) and Jeff Heyne (12 and seven rebounds) in late Monday night game.  Kyle Kegley also had seven rebounds and seven points. San Marcos (2-2) fell behind 21-9 after the first period and could never catch the Lancers.


Gary Raya Co-Ed Classic: Tuesday Results--(Dec. 16, 1998)

El Dorado 67, Pico Rivera El Rancho 33--Richard Nagy scored 20 points and Ryan Carlos had 14 for El Dorado (5-3), which led, 30-17, at the half.

Esperanza 66, Corona 53--Kenny Ho scored 18 points and Lloyd Walls 14 to lead Esperanza (4-2).

 


Heritage Christian Patriot Classic Results From Tuesday--(Dec. 16, 1998)

Heritage Christian 56, Southern California Christian 53--Brandon Newte scored 16 points and Todd Warner had 13 for Heritage Christian (3-3) in the first-round game. 

St. Margaret's 65, Lawndale Masada 40--Alex Huff scored 37 points, making eight of 15 three- pointers, to lead St. Margaret's. Huff also had seven steals. Teammate Brian Sternberg scored seven points and had 12 assists and nine rebounds for St. Margaret's (2-4).

Ambassador Christian 62, St. Michael's Prep 55--Matt Winter had 34 points, five rebounds and five assists for Fontana Ambassador Christian (3-2) in the Patriot Classic Tournament. Because of a sick teammate, Winter had to take on a bigger scoring role after switching from point guard to shooting guard. Scorers for AC were  Powell 0, Harper 13, Winter 34, Peck 10, Cheris 0, Dart 2, Ruiz 3. St. Michaels' scorers were Miller 26, Trebel 8, Alactra 4, Bowbish 6, Valencia 4, Munozcano 7.

Calvary Chapel Murrieta Valley 46, Los Pinos 44 (OT)-- no results were available, but we're still trying.


La Sierra Tourney Results-(Dec. 16, 1998)

La Sierra Academy 58, Arrowhead Christian 56--Redlands Arrowhead Christian Academy (1-4) was hurt by foul trouble late in the fourth quarter and lost a first-round game to Riverside La Sierra Academy (5-2) in the La Sierra Academy Tournament.  AC scorers were Becerra 29, Passwater 5, Fisher 6, Leenstra 8, Learn 8. La Sierra scorers were Strickland 0, Bivens 7, Duran 0, Tutt 5, Verde 0, Dababneh 18, J.Kiemeney 5, M.Kiemeney 13, Patrascu 11.

Loma Linda Academy 63, Glendale Academy 39--Loma Linda Academy (3-0) led by as many as 24 points against Glendale Academy (0-4) in the first round of the La Sierra Academy Tournament in Riverside. Jamie Guth led the Roadrunners with 14 points and four steals and Shannon MacKenzie added 13 points.

Ontario Christian 66, Woodcrest Christian 54--Rommel Agee and Ryan Fuqua had 17 and 16 points, respectively as the Knights (3-1) advanced to tonight's semifinals against Loma Linda Academy at Riverside La Sierra Academy. Ryan Grant had 12 points and six steals and Steve Douma had eight rebounds for the Knights. Woodcrest Christian dropped to 5-3.


Los Alamitos Tournament: Tuesday Results, First Round--(Dec. 16, 1998)

Los Alamitos 72, La Habra 54--Ron Prettyman scored a game-high 17 points and had seven steals for the host Griffins.  Teammate Andrew Pleick had 13 points, seven assists and seven rebounds. Los Alamitos (4-3) led the entire game, but the Highlanders had a third-quarter run where they scored 13 points to match the Griffins in the quarter.

Mayfair 88, Wilson 38--The Monsoons made eight 3-three pointers and sophomore guard Josh Childress scored a game-high 27 points in a pool play victory. Mayfair blew the game open in the third quarter, outscoring Wilson, 31-10. Jesus Miranda and Edwin Draughan added 17 and 13 points, respectively, for the Monsoons.  

Villa Park 74, Cabrillo 50--The Spartans used 13 points from Matt MacGinnis and 11 from Andy Olsen in a pool play victory over the Jaguars. Cabrillo (4-5) was led by Alex Sansberry and Tremayne Rankins who had 15 and 11 points, respectively.

Pacifica 73, Cypress 68--Alphonso Stoval scored a game-high 24 points for visiting Cypress. Justin Yun scored 15.  Adam Rachlin scored 14 and Brandon Wislocki 13 points for Pacifica. Rachlin was nine for nine from the free-throw line.


Rancho Cucamonga Tournament Results From Tuesday--(Dec. 16, 1998)

West Covina 76, Ganesha 64-- Ganesha fell into an early hole, and could not dig itself out, falling to 1-5. William Warren scored 23 points, and Ike Floyd scored 14 for Ganesha.


Sonora Tournament: Tuesday First Round Results--(Dec. 16, 1998)

Long Beach Millikan 58, Mission Viejo 46--Off to their best start in five years, the Rams (5-3) got 16 points each from junior forward Sam Fernley and Andre Sparks in a first-round victory. Fernley and Sparks also combined for 18 rebounds and teammate Rodney Spencer added 9 points, 9 assists and 5 rebounds.

La Mirada 69, Whittier 48-- Behind a game-high 26 points from senior guard Aza Villalobos, who hit four 3-pointers, the Matadores (1-5) won their first of the season with a first-round victory over the Cardinals (2-4) at the Sonora High.

Century 48, Edison 28--Mike Zepeda had 21 points and 10 rebounds and Paul Ferretti scored 14 points for Century (2-6) in the consolation game.


Troy Tournament: Results From Tuesday--(Dec. 16, 1998)

Troy 59, Cerritos Valley Christian 49--Jerry Inzunza scored a game-high 36 points, including seven three-pointers and Kyle Fulmer scored 10 points for the host Warriors (4-3). Jeff Jonaitis had four blocked shots for Troy.   Erick Streelman led Valley Christian (5-1) with 16 points, and Brent Boekestein scored 10.
