Bakersfield East Wins San Luis
Obispo Tournament--(Dec. 6, 1998)
Championship Game:
Bakersfield East 62, Calvary Christian 61--Bakersfield East senior Steve Carter scored 25 points and grabbed 21 rebounds to lead East to a win over Calvary Christian in the finals of the San Luis Obispo Tournament. Marquese Jingles hit a three-pointer for East with 40 seconds left and East never trailed the rest of the way. Jingles scored 11 points and had 10 rebounds for the Blades (3-0).
Consolation Championship:
Aliso Niguel 49, Laguna Hills 33--Brandon Sievers scored 18 points as the Wolverines, who improved to 2-2 on the season, won the consolation championship of the San Luis Obispo Tournament by beating the Hawks (2-2). Dino Lamela (11 points) made the all-tournament team for Aliso Niguel. Laguna Hills had advanced to the finals of the consolation round by beating San Marcos, 69-55 on Friday, but dropped to the consolation bracket on Thursday by losing to East Bakersfield on Thursday, losing in overtime despite a three-point shot by Josh Pierson which sent the game into the extra period. The score of that one was 64-60, and with the win East Bakersfield continued to advance in the winner's bracket.
Seventh Place Game:
San Marcos 82, Live Oak 37: The Royals got defensive about their slow start to the season, holding their opponents to just 10 baskets out of 45 shots en route to winning the seventh place game at the San Luis Obispo Tournament."We played with much better defensive intensity,'' said Coach Chris Hantgin, whose club improves to 1-2. "We also had only nine turnovers. We really took care of the ball, and I think that led to a lot of good offensive opportunities." Adam Nance led San Marcos with 18 points while Mike Casias and Matt James added 15 apiece. Trey Putnam pulled down 13 rebounds while Randy Moharram handed out six assists.
