San Luis Obispo Beats Santa Ynez In Opener--(Dec. 3, 1998)
San Luis Obispo forced 28 turnovers and was
nearly perfect from the free throw line in their season opener, defeating Santa Ynez
62-36 this last Monday night in Tiger Gym. Santa Ynez made just 42 percent of
its floor shots, including no attempts from beyond the three-point line, and cashed in on
just four of 13 free throws. The Tigers started an all-senior line-up, led by
6-6 center Matt Williamson with 17 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the floor. Sheldon
Muller was the lone Santa Ynez player in double figures with 18 points on 9-for-15
shooting from the floor. Danny D'Entremont added 11 points, although he made just
five of 16 floor shots. Brandon Connelly, Brent Walker and Tony Lewis each
contributed seven points. Guard Riley King produced nine assists.
San Luis Obispo, which made 11 of its 12 free throws, put together two scoring bursts in
the first half to take command of the game. Santa Ynez led 6-3 before the
Tigers went on a 12-0 run and San Luis Obispo also went on a 9-0 run in the second quarter
for a 30-13 lead with 1:30 to go. The Tigers led 32-16 at the break and their
largest lead was the final 26-point margin of victory.
San Luis Obispo ( 1-0 ) will play Aliso Niguel in the opening round of its own Kiwanis de Tolosa Tournament on Thursday, December 3, 1998 (today) at 8:30 p.m. Santa Ynez ( 0-1 ) played at Arroyo Grande last night, but we don't yet have the results of that one.
