Saugus Tournament: Oxnard
Defeats Calabasas In Final--(Dec. 6, 1998)
Oxnard 65, Calabasas 59--Jacob Galloway, the tournament's most valuable player, scored 21 points and had six assists in leading the Yellowjackets to the championship. Damian Tafoya had 11 points and seven assists, and Matt Merricks added nine points and six steals for Oxnard (3-1). Guard Spencer Hariton scored 22 points for the Coyotes (3-1) and Mike Goldman and Steve McKeown each had 11. Calabasas led, 29-25, at halftime and went on an 8-0 run to take a 41-31 lead. But Oxnard answered with an 8-0 run to tie the score, 41-41, late in the third quarter. Matt Merricks' three-pointer gave Oxnard the lead for good, 44-42, at the start of the fourth quarter. He then put the game away with two free throws with four seconds left.
"We started taking advantage of our size in the second half," Coach Henry Lobo of Oxnard told the LA Times after the game. "And [Merricks] had a phenomenal fourth quarter."
Third Place:
Quartz Hill 62, Westlake 53--Brandon Butchart and Brady Chelette each scored 15 points for the Rebels (2-2), who took third place. Jake DeGennaro scored 27 points for the Warriors (2-2).
Fifth Place:
Stockdale 55, Saugus 52-- Britt Beal scored 18 points to lead all players, including three 3-pointers, and the Stockdale boys' basketball team took fifth third place in the Saugus Tournament with a win over the host school Saturday afternoon.James Johnson scored 10 for the Mustangs. Nick Echevestre scored 16 points for Saugus (2-2).
