Murrieta Valley Nighthawk Classic:
Brian Wethers' Big Game Thursday--(Dec. 18, 1998)

We don't have a schedule for this one, just some results, but it looks like Brian Wethers is continuing on his scoring rampage, averaging 25 points per game.  Here are yesterday's results: 

Murrieta Valley 69, West Valley 51--Murrieta Valley rode its hot shooting to an early lead on the way to a 69-51 victory over Hemet West Valley on Thursday at the Nighthawk Classic in Murrieta. The Nighthawks (6-1) advanced to a semifinal tonight against rival Temecula Valley.  Murrieta Valley hit 10 of 14 from the field in the first period, taking a 26-14 lead. The Nighthawks increased their lead to 22 points at halftime. Ryan Coyle was 6 of 8 from three-point range, finishing with 20 points. Brian Wethers, averaging 25 points per game, led all scorers with 24 on 11-of-17 shooting. "Everyone was in synch," Murrieta Valley coach Steve Tarabilda said. "With our defense playing well, we controlled the game from the start. The guys were moving the ball well and it seemed like every time we came down, someone was hitting a shot." Ryan Williams led West Valley with 18 points. Complete scoring for West Valley was DelaRosa 0, Franco 4, Pierce 11, Alvarez 7, Williams 18, Olson 3, Reynolds 1, Nevarez 3, Smith 2, Vineyard 2. For Murrieta Valley, the scorers were Coyle 20, Cole 0, Wethers 24, Stiewel 8, Cordova 3, Richardson 3, Brown 6, Jones 1, Linsley 2, Ruffin 2.

Temescal Canyon 57, Chaparral 54--Lake Elsinore Temescal Canyon (3-5) won a pool-play game at the Nighthawk Classic in Murrieta. Temescal Canyon raced to a 10-2 first period lead and was never caught. B.J. Robinson had 16 points for Temescal Canyon and Scott Metcalf added 13. "We controlled the game and boards, which was the difference," Temescal Canyon coach Mark Williams said. "They tried several presses and we consistently broke them."  Scoring for Chaparral were Kurtz 3, Larsen 5, Castillo 2, Hopkins 4, Buloer 2, Palmer 2, Cooper 23, Scott 6, Cooke 7.   Temescal Canyon scorers were Cheone 9, Brycsak 2, Gomez 5, Thomas 2, Cleary 6, Metcalf 13, Robinson 16, Miramontes 2, Owens 2.

Temecula Valley 71, Cathedral City 57-- No details were available, just the scoring: Temecula Valley scorers were Crain 6, Bryant 11, Phillips 24, Livaccari 3, Triba 5, Knox 6, Rentie 12, McDaniels 4. Cathedral City scorers were Thornburg 2, Gerald Devance 6, Cooper 14, Patrick 15, Peters 10, Alvarez 4, Green 4, Heredia 2.  Oh, we also know that Temecula Valley led 33-25 at the half.  Gerald Devance had one three pointer, Knox had 2, and Renti had one.

Elsinore 80, Paloma Valley 46--Elsinore outscored Menifee Paloma Valley 20-7 in the third quarter to open up a large lead en route to a victory in pool play at the Nighthawk Classic in Murrieta. Kris Maxey led the Tigers (4-4) with 16 points. Josh Mativa scored 14 and added ten rebounds. Bobby Russo had six assists. Elsinore will play Lake Elsinore Temescal Canyon today at 3 p.m. in the tournament's fifth-place semifinal game.  Scoring for Paloma Valley were Buglitz with 5, Evers 8, Blakemore 18, G.Brown 3, M.Brown 2, Johnson 2, Alvarez 6, Garcia 2.   Scorers for Elsinor were Bagwell 7, Russo 9, Maxey 16, W.Mativa 13, J.Mativa 14, Fincher 2, Ward 6, Farrells 4, C.Smith 9, J.Smith 4.
