Grill Tourney Results--(Dec. 6, 1998)
First the semifinal results from Friday:
Irvine 46, Troy 45--Irvine held Troy scoreless for
the final two minutes of the game in the semifinals of the National Sports Grill
Invitational at Loara High. The Vaqueros improved to 3-1 behind 15 points from Chris
Ferguson. Kyle Fulmer scored 15 points to lead the Warriors (2-1).
Santa Margarita 68, Pacific 62--The Eagles (3-0) earned a spot in the finals of the
National Sports Grill Tournament by beating Pacific (2-1) in a close game. We didn't get
any of the other details of this game.
In other games on Friday:
Loara 57, Woodbridge 51--Loara (2-1) advanced to the
fifth-place finals of the tournament. Woodbridge drops to 1-2 on the year with the loss.
Guard Herbert Garcia had 19 points and six assists for Loara.
California 65, El Dorado 53--California (2-1) won to face Loara in the fifth-place
finals. The El Dorado Golden Hawks dropped to 1-2 on the year.
Saturday's Finals:
First Place Game:
Santa Margarita 54, Irvine 46-- Spencer Gloger (6'-6" Sr. SG/SF) scored 30 points leading Santa Margarita to the championship on Saturdy night. Ryan Dwight scored 4, Tim Rahall 5, Ryan Kramer had 15. Irvine was led by Chris Ferguson who had 13 points. Santa Margarita improved to 4-0 on the season, and Irvine dropped to 3-1. Gloger had 4 three-pointers.
Third Place Game:
Pacific 53, Troy 52--The Warriors (2-2) trailed by 12
after the first quarter and lost on a 8-foot jumper at the buzzer in the third-place game
of the National Sports Grill Tournament. Mike Raco scored 12 points for Troy. Pacific
improved to 3-1.
Fifth Place Game:
Loara 70, California 65--The Saxons (3-1) erased a
nine-point first quarter deficit as Wes Wardrop scored 22 points in the victory in the
fifth-place game of the National Sports Grill Tournament. Ben Wardrop added 16 points for
Loara.
Consolation Championship:
Esperanza 67, La Quinta 51--Jonathan Stevens scored 16 points as the Aztecs (3-1) took a nine-point first-quarter lead and won the consolation championship of the National Sports Grill Tournament. La Quinta fell to 2-2.
Ninth Place Game:
Woodbridge 70, El Dorado 67--In a game that featured
seven technical fouls, the Warriors (2-2) got 22 points from Brent Weiss in the victory
over the Golden Hawks (1-3) in the ninth-place game of the National Sports Grill
Tournament.
Eleventh Place:
Servite 44, El Modena 42-- J. Cortez had 15 points for El Mo, while Servite was led by Pnsford with 11. Servite improved to 2-2 on the year with the win.
Thirteenth Place:
St. Paul 63, Valencia Valencia 43-- The Swordsmen
(2-2) broke open a close game with a 23-9 fourth quarter to capture 13th place with a win
over the Vikings (1-3) at Loara High. Senior guard Jesse Martinez hit seven 3-pointers en
route to scoring a game-high 25 points for St. Paul.
