Laguna Blanca Tournament
First Day Results--(Dec. 10, 1998)

This one is a small school tournament, co-hosted by Bishop Diego and Laguna Blanca, which is a prelude to another small school tournament which takes place later this month up at Santa Maria St. Joe's and features many of the same teams. The Laguna Blanca tournament will run for the next two days, and will feature some of the local D-V schools, including Laguna Blanca, Villanova, and Holy Martyrs.  Here's what happened in the first round:

Laguna Blanca 88, Ventura Co. Christian 60-- Chris Tamas scored 26 points and 11 rebounds and Brian Niehaus added 23 points and eight rebounds as Laguna Blanca won its opening game of a tournament for small schools it is co-hosting with Bishop Diego. Laguna Blanca, 2-3, plays Holy Martyrs tonight at 8 at Laguna.  VCC;s scoring was McQuillion 4, Ralston 26, Smith 12, Kerr 8, Attell 4, Silvia 3.  Laguna Blanca's scorers were Scott 7, Castellanos 4, Wilson 12, Geyser 3, Wicks 4, Tamas 26, Kaufman 4, Ferguson 5, Neihaus 23. Total 88.

We don't have results of these other games, but we do have some scores:

Santa Clarita Christian 55,  Villanova 38
Coast Union 68,  Hillcrest Christian 68-20
Holy Martyrs 50,  Western Christian 50-41.

At Bishop Diego, here's what happened:

Bishop Diego 86, Cornerstone Christian 72-- Jason Gibbs scored 29 of his 38 points in the first half as Bishop Diego routed Cornerstone Christian in
a first round game of a tournament for small schools it is co-hosting with Laguna Blanca. Coach John Ward cited Jason Renick and Josh Steward for "good all-around games'' in support of Gibbs. The Cardinals, 3-0, play Grace Brethren tonight at 8 p.m.   Cornerstone Christian's scoring was Greg Walker 19, Tasker 13, Grant Walker 2, Haan 10, Kilpatrick 8, Miller 20, Hurtago 2.  Bishop Diego's scorers were Steward 10, Capritto 8, Alexander 7, Renick 11, Um 2, Martinez 4, Scheftic 8, and Gibbs with the game high 38.
