Glendora Holiday Classic:
Jacobsen Beats Temple City--(Dec. 15, 1998)
The Glendora Holiday Classic (the second the two Glendora tournaments during the Christmas season) matched up Glendora against Temple City last night. And as Larry Hinton of the Pasadena Star-News wrote, "Even though Glendora's 91-70 victory over Temple City High School didn't reflect the true story, both teams had a rough time matching up against each other in the first round of the Glendora Holiday Classic."
Temple City's tallest player is only 6'-1, and they really had no answer for the 6'-6" Clark twins or Casey Jacobsen (6'-6" Sr. SG) either. But Glendora actually had trouble keeping up with the smaller Temple City guys out on the perimeter, where the Rams hit 12 of 31 from three-point range.
Glendora Coach Mike Le Duc told reporters after the game, "This was a really difficult game to play well and execute for us. We shot great in the first half. I think we were 18 for 19 on 2 pointers. But after that it was difficult to keep focus and concentration. Glendora led 27-18 at the end of the first quarter, and stretched the lead to 57-31 at the half, but then they allowed Temple City to score 39 points in the second half.
Of course, Jacobsen, Clark and the rest of the Tartans also scored 34 points themselves, and managed to win easily.
Jacobsen scored a game high 28 points. After missing his first shot of the game, he then made the next foru in a row, two dunks and tweo three pointers to lead Glendora on a 22-10 run to open the game. Chris Clark (6'-6" Sr. SG/SF) who has signed to play at UC Riverside next year, had 22 points, mostly off fast-break transition and great defense.
Temple City had four players scoring in double figures: Josh Johnson scored 17, including three 3-pointers, Kevin Toda had 16 off the bench; Ralph Becarra had 15, and Jason Johnson scored 10 as well. Others scoring for Temple City included Jack Li with 2, Ryan Salcido with 2, and Alvaro Gonzales with 8.
Others scoring for Glendora were Bruce Hatch with 12, Michael Ahmad with 4, Jason Davis 8, Chad Clark 10, Graham Miller 4, and Scott Giles 3.
Both Glendora and Temple City will continue playing Wednesdy. Glendora will play Riverside Poly at 8:00 p.m. in a quarterfinal matchup, while Temple City will play Arroyo in a consolation quarterfinal at 5:00 p.m.
