Centennial Holiday Classic First Round--(Dec. 16, 1998)
We're not sure all of these games were actually played in the Centennial Holiday Classic, but from the way the results were arranged in the Riverside Press-Enterprise and the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, it sure looked that way. Because we don't have access to a hard copy of a Riverside or San Bernardino paper, we'll have to settle for what we can surmise. Hey, at least we know that one game, the Centennial v. Corona game belongs here. This is what we think we know:
Corona Centennial 73, Colton 65--Corona Centennial
(3-3) took an early lead and withstood a fourth-quarter run by Colton to win a first-round
game of the Centennial Holiday Classic. Centennial, led by 22 points from Jamaal Williams,
took a 20-8 lead in the first half. But Colton, led by 19 points from Latarus Parish, cut
the lead to eight points by halftime and cut it to three points with under a minute to
play on a three-point shot by Parish. However, Demetreus Ross (16 points, six steals) and
Williams hit 5 of 7 free throws in the final minute to clinch the victory.
Pacific 87, Canyon Springs 73--Pacific (5-1) was led by Chaun Ballard with 22
points and six rebounds, James Burries with 20 points and 20 rebounds, and Mike Hall with
18 points and 11 rebounds. Pacific scoring: Ballard 22, Burries 21, Mike Hall
18, Smith 12, Boyce 2, Jury 1, Marcus Hall 2, Kinser 5, Tutitelle 4. Canyon Springs
scoring was: Braxton 4, Soloman 8, Stachowsky 18, Gibson 18, Robinson 11, Walker 1, Baker
8, White 2, Rosson 3.
Norco 60, San Gorgonio 44-- Norco scorers were Justin Norman 19, Branch 7, Joey
Vergara 19, Reyes 8, Luarca 2, Baaske 2, Gurnett 2, Burghgraef 1. San Gorgonio scoring
was: Picket 2, Tim Blackwell 12, Jamal Johnson 14, Bucholz 7, Statworth 4, Mcaffe 3,
Pippen 2
J.W. North 72, San Bernardino 53-- North's scorers were Burnett 4, B.Jones 7, Gilchrist 6, Mgbeke 11, McCloud 1, Carlise 4, Walter 20, Dickson 16, Leonard 4. San Bernardino scoring was: Turrell 7, Ferrell 6, Carter 2, Miller 10, Copeland 6, Palomore 4, Jackson 2, Thaxton 16. North led the entire way in this game, and had a 34-18 half time lead. San Bernardino coach Steve Kelly was assessed with a technical four in the game.
It could well be that a couple of these games were just non-league, non-tournament games, so if anyone out there has the straight info on this tournament, let us know.
