Bolsa Grande Tournament Final Results--(Dec. 6, 1998)

Starting in reverse order, we'll pick up a couple of games which preceded the final. We may have done a couple of these on Friday, and we're just not sure. Here they are anyway:

Savanna 72, Santa Ana Valley 56-- This was a pool play game, but the Orange County Register was reporting it yesterday, so maybe we missed it too.  If we did, then here it is, if not, then you'll find this one was reported on Friday. Solomon Brown, a guard, and forward Alan Purnell each scored 24 points for the Savanna Rebels. Santa Ana Valley fell to 0-3 with the loss.

We know we didn't get this one yet, so are some Friday's semifinal results:

Katella 75, Bolsa Grande 53--Katella boys basketball coach Tom Danley won his 600th career game as his Knights beat Bolsa Grande, 75-53, Friday in the semifinals of the Bolsa Grande Tournament. Guard Robert Abercrombie scored a game-high 30 points, 20 of them coming in the first half, to lead the Knights (3-0). Bolsa Grande fell to 2-1, and forward Brandon Jordan scored 12 points for Katella. in the losing effort.

Marina 53, Laguna Beach 44--The Marina Vikings, who improved to 3-0 on the year, advanced to the championship game of the Bolsa Grande Tournament with the victory over the Laguna Beach Artists, who fell to 2-1. Dustin Kaatz scored 18 points to lead Marina.

The championship game was played last night at 8:00 p.m. at Bolsa Grande, and here are the results:

Mayfair 63, Buena Park 36--Matt Okoro scored 12 points and had 13 rebounds, but the Coyotes (3-1) were outscored 24-9 in the second quarter and lost the championship game of the Coyote Classic. Mayfair improved to 4-0.

Third Place Game:

Laguna Beach 51, Bolsa Grande 38--The Artists (3-1) took third place in the Bolsa Grande Tournament as Travis Hanour scored 13 points and Kurt Beimfohr added 12 points. Kevin Pham scored 14 points to lead the Matadors (2-2).

Fifth Place Game:

Savanna 64, Long Beach Wilson 61--Marcus Butler hit two free throws with seven seconds remaining as the Rebels (2-2) overcame a 16-point first-quarter deficit to beat the Bruins (1-3) in the fifth-place game of the Bolsa Grande Tournament. Solomon Brown scored 30 points and Alan Purnell added 14 points for Savanna.

Consolation Bracket:

Fullerton 71, Santa Ana Valley 57--Akachi Azubuike scored 27 points as the Indians (1-3) won fifth place in the Bolsa Grande Tournament by beating the Falcons (0-4).
