Bonita Vista Beats LA Jordan--(Dec. 31, 1998)
In the consolation championship game played at 2:10 in the West Gym at Long Beach State, Bonita Vista defeated Los Angeles Jordan, 75-62.
Jordan got to the final by dropping into the consolation bracket with a first round loss to Clovis West on Saturday in game 11, then defeating Hanford on Monday, and then beatinhg Pomona and Laguna Creek in two games on Tuesday. Bonita Vista made it here by first losing to Bakersfield in the first round on Saturday, then defeating Antelope Valley and Canyon Springs on Monday, and by defeating Morningside on Tuesday in game no. 41.
Yesterday, Bonita Vista jumped out to a 23-9 lead at the end of the first, and eventually stretched that to a 28-9 lead into the second quarter, before LA finally started scoring in earnest, but Jordan never quite recovered, even though the Bulldogs played the Barons pretty much even the rest of the way through the game. Victor Esquer (6'-1" Sr. SG) had 21 points and Lamar Robson (6'-3" Sr. SG/SF) added another 18 for Bonita Vista. Roy Morris (6'-1" Sr. SG) played very well, and finished with 12, while Lester Manglicmont (5'-9" Jr. PG) finished with 17 points, including three threes. Others scoring for Bonita Vista were Tyson Leninger (6'-2" Sr. G) with 1, Sonny Jenson (6'-6" Sr. F/C) with 3, and Ryan Stamp (6'-4" Sr. F) with four.
Jordan was led by Tyrone Rily (6'-6" Jr. F) with 19 points. Kevin Patton (6'-6" Sr. F) had 12 points, and Byron Champers (6'-1" Sr. G) with 11. Larry Carter (6'-0" Sr. G) finished with 12. Ricky Gallagher (6'-6" Sr. F) had 2 and Leon Jones (6'-2" Sr. G) had 8.
Roy Morris was the most fluid player for Bonita Vista,
5'9" JR Lester Manglicmont and 6'1" SR Victor Esquer were hitting
their 3-point shots to keep the Barons out in front. But, after extending the lead to
28-9, the Barons and Morris went on a turnover binge, and L.A.
Jordan cut the lead to 34-23 in the closing minutes of the half. About a minute or two
later, the 2nd quarter was over, and Bonita Vista was up, 38-25.
Here's the scoring by quarters:
Bonita Vista | 23 | 15 | 18 | 19 |
LA Jordan | 9 | 16 | 16 | 19 |
