BIW Final: Canyon Springs 47, Centennial 42--(Dec. 31, 1998)

In the consolation runner-up game Canyon Springs beat Compton Centannial 47-42. We didn't see it but did get the results:

Canyon Springs got here by losing in the first round to Pasadena on Saturday, then beating Millikan Monday morning at Lakewood High in game no. 17, and then losing to Bonita Vista Monday afternoon in the second of their consolation bracket games (game 37).  Centennial got here by losing in the first round to Bellarmine Prep of San Jose, then defeating LA High on Monday night at Lakewood High in game no. 23 in the consolation bracket. On Tuesday, Centennial lost a close one to Laguna Creek and Joe Kirchofer (6'-9" Sr. F/C) who scored 22 points. In that one, Marquis Poole, who
had scored 47 points Monday night in the Apaches' win over L.A. High, scored another 23. So we were expecting big things from Marquis in the consolation runner-up game.

But when we looked at the box for this one, we couldn't believe it, because Marquis Poole, who had been averaging something like close to 30 ppg for the four previous games, only scored 2 points. So we asked Louis Johnson from the Long Beach Press-Telegram who saw the game what was up and he told us that Marqui had played less than 10 minutes due to an injury, a deep thigh bruise. Wow.  The result was that in the first half, Centennial only scored 14 points.  Steve Sims (6'-5" Sr. SG/SF) did manage 18 points for the Apaches, while some other guy named "Williams" who wasn't on the roster also scored 13.  Other's scoring were Donny Joubert (6'-0" Jr. G) with 2,  Douglas 4, and Lee Abari (6'-2" Fr. G) had 2.

Senior point guard John Stakowsky ( 5'-11" Sr. G) had 14 points for Canyon Springs; other scorers were Jason Braxton (6'-2" So. G) with 6, Solomon Bates (6'-3" Sr. SF/SG) with 2, Dyron Walker (6'-2" Jr. G) with 4, Charles Gibson (6'-2" Jr. G) with 4, Bryant Robinson (6'-0" Jr. G) with 12, and Maurice Baker (6'-3" Sr. F) with 2.
