Best In The West Day One: Game No. 7
Serra Beats Burbank-- (Dec. 26, 1998)
Serra 62, Burbank 50
Burbank has been plagued this season by an inability to put the ball in the basket from outside, and on Saturday, while they had some solid play and scoring from Jack Holwahjian (6'-0" Sr. SG) who led with 14 points, Pablo Gonzalez (5'-10" Jr. PG/SG) who had 12, and Damien Jordan (6'-2" Jr. SG/SF) who finished with 13 points, Burbank failed to take advantage of Eric Rohwer (6'-9" Sr. F/C) and likewise Rohwer didn't take advantage of his positioning on the floor, finishing with only 5 points for the day. Eric was also heavily guarded by the bigger and faster Serra guys, notably Earl Lewis (6'-6'-5" Sr. F) who finished with 10 points, Aerick Sanders (6'-8" Jr. C/F) who finished with 11, and even Ryan Odums (6'-2" Sr. G) who had 13 points. But most of all, Burbank was mortally hurt by Doyle Cole's (6'-6" Jr. SG/SF) great shooting, and he had 20 points, scoring from inside and outside equally well. Other Serra scorers were D.J. Wyatt (5'-8" Jr. PG) with 2, Palmer Brown (6'-4" Sr. F) with 4, and Ryan Plummer (6'-3" Sr. G) with 2.
Burbank's other scorers were Frank Reed (5'-10" So. G) with 4 and Fadi Khalil (5'-9" Sr. G) with 2. Burbank drops into the consolation bracket and will play Perris at 2:40 p.m. at Lakewood High on Monday, and Serra will now face Compton at 11:45 a.m. in the West Gym on Monday at Cal State Long Beach.
Here's the scoring by quarters:
Burbank | 11 | 8 | 15 | 16 |
Serra | 13 | 10 | 16 | 23 |
