Best In The West Day One: Game No. 5
Verbum Dei Beats Lakewood-- (Dec. 26, 1998)
Verbum Dei 81, Lakewood 57
Verbum Dei got off to a big start behind Dalron Johnson's 17 first half points (he had 22 total), and outscored Lakewood 21-9 in the third quarter to insure the win. Dalron played great, and Cal assistant coach Scott Beeten, in attendance at the tournament joked with and about Dalron after the game saying, "Yeah, he just continues to break our hearts with his scoring and great play," referring of course to the fact that Dalron spurned the Bears for the UNLV Runnin' Rebels. Verbum Dei had a very balanced attack, getting scoring from almost everyone, and they had four players in double figures, whereas Lakewood only had two guys score above 10. Ricky Balboa (6'-2" Sr. SG) had a team high 19 points for Lakewood.
Lakewood's other scorers were Anthony Evans (5'-10" Sr. G) with 9, Lamont Mitchell (6'-2" Sr. G) with 11, Branden Barnes (6'-2" So. G) 1, Bobby Thompson (6'-1" So. G) had 7, Adam Sahagun (6'-3" Jr. G/F) had 3, Lamar Benjamin (6'-1" Jr. G) had 7.
Verbum Dei was led by Johnson, and followed by Jamal Deal (5'-11" Jr. PG/SG) with 12, Robert Watkins (6'-1" Jr. SG) with 11, Kyle Jones (6'-3" Sr. SG/SF) with 15, Marlon Parmer (6'-1" Sr. PG) with 6, Washum Dsshiell (6'-3" Sr. SG/SF) with 2, Earl Shuford (6'-6" Sr. F) with 4, Larry Davenport (6'-4" Sr. F) with 4, and Nick Dobson (6'-9" Sr. C) with 3.
Verbum Dei will play Harvard Westlake at 10:15 a.m. on Monday in the West Gym in game No. 17 of the winner's bracket, while Lakewood returns home to it's own gym to play Morningside at 1:05 p.m. at Lakewood High in the consolation bracket in game No. 19 on Monday.
Here's the score by quarters:
