Best In The West Day One Results &
Monday's 2nd & 3rd Round Schedules--(Dec. 26, 1998)

We didn't get to see all the games, but we did see most of them on this first day, and at least for those we didn't see, we got complete scoring and even some pictures. Things got started a bit later than expected because the fine folks at Cal State Long Beach forgot to have working clocks in both of the gyms at the Goldmine (the old men's gym), and in the West Gym, one of the bleachers wasn't operational, and the shot clocks were nowhere to be found at 10:00 a.m. . . . . well, you get the picture. It wasn't the fault of anyone connected with the organization of the tournament (e.g., Mike Jackson, Wayne Merino, etc) because they did a fine job coping, and things eventually got underway about 10:30 a.m.... No, if anyone is to be taken to task for not having the stuff ready for this tourney on time, it's the guys at CSULB who should have been more prepared. But once the bugs were ironed out, and things were finally working, this first day came off very well. Good action, large crowds. Exciting games. Well, there were some big time mismatches, but there were more than a few really competitive games.

We'll do an updated bracket later, together with a schedule for Monday's games in the winner's and consolation brackets. For now, the results of the first day's games will follow. Please note that the order these will be posted in is not the same order in which the games were played, but corresponds instead to the game number of each game in the bracketing. i.e., Artesia was seeded No. 1, at the top end of the upper half of the bracket, and they played in game No. 1, but it was actually one of the later games, played at 6:00 p.m.on Saturday.

For now, here's the second round schedule in the Winner's half of the bracket. All the games in the winner's bracket only are at Cal State Long Beach:
