Best In The West Day One: Game No. 14
Compton Centennial Falls To Bellarmine Prep--(Dec. 27, 1998)

Compton Centennial 64, Bellarmine Prep 70

Bellarmine Prep, from San Jose proved too much yesterday, even for Marquis Poole (6'-3" Sr. SG) who scored 21 points in the losing effort. Poole will play next year at Washington State, but he's not the only Apache worth looking at and we just think Steve Sims (6'-5" Sr. G/F) who has a 3.75 GPA and scored a 960 on the SAT is also a big-time prospect and deserving a a look or two, and he had 17 points yesterday.  Centennial was leading through the first quarter, but then Bellarmine Prep just exploded in the second quarter, outscoring Centennial 25-12.  Most of the game was played pretty much even, with Centennial making up some of the deficit in the third (19-15 scoring), and the two teams played dead even at 20 each in the fourth.

We hadn't seen Bellarmine Prep before yesterday, and we don't know what division of CIF they'll play in, but there are more than a few teams here and elsewhere who hope they don't play in their division.  The Bells were led by Derek Martinez (6'-7" Sr. F/C) who had 22 points, mostly inside the paint, and Jeb Ivey (6'-2" Sr. G) who scored 20 points (at least we're pretty sure that was Jeb and not his brother Ziki (6'-0" Jr. G)). Richard Harris (5'-11" Sr. PG) also had 12 points, while Justin Abreu (6'-3" Sr. G/F) had 10. Nate Ramezene (5'-11" Jr. PG/SG) had 3, while Craig Kovaleski (6'-3" Sr. F) had 4.

Besides Poole and Sims, other Centennial scorers were someone named "Douglas" who doesn't show up on the roster, with 12 (at least that's what the scoring looked like for him), another kid named "Williams" who's also not on the roster, with 8,  and two guys who are on the roster, Lawrence Smith (5'-9" Sr. PG) with 3,  and  Keith Robinson (5'-8" Sr. PG/SG) with 3.

Here's the scoring by quarters:

Bellarmine Prep 10 25 15 20
Centennial 13 12 19 20

Bellarmine Prep advances to the winnner's bracket and will play Long Beach Jordan on Monday at the East Gym in a 1:05 p.m. match at Cal State Long Beach (Game No. 31).  Centennial will play LA High and should easily handle them in a game which is set for Lakewood High at 7:15 p.m. Monday in the Consolation bracket (Game No.23).
