USC Wins Over CSUN
In Ugly Opener--(Nov. 21, 1999)
We're a bit late on this one, but it's been a busy weekend, and we've been writing up a ton of stuff for the upcoming kickoff of the high school season, which officially gets underway in the Southern Section tomorrow for many schools as they are permitted to play their first scrimmage games. But back to local SoCal college basketball: This one was played Friday night, and from a reporting standpoint, better late than never: USC may not have looked especially good, but they got the job done, and Sam Clancy scored 24 points in the Trojans first official game of the season against the Matadors of Cal State Northridge, who were led by Carl Holmes, with 14 points, and Brian Heinle, who had 12 points and five rebounds. Even though USC managed to pull off the win, the Trojans lost the second half, getting outscored in the second half, 37-36. But that one point difference was more than enough considering they had a 37-22 lead at the half, and USC held on to win 73-59.
Brian Scalabrine was also impressive in the win, scoring 18 points, but Sam Clancy was the man. He scored six quick points in a 12-5 run that put the Trojans out in front fo good. After going into the locker room with a 37-22 lead at the half, they started the second half with a pair of 3-pointers from Jeff Trepagnier, who also finished with 14 points on 2-5 shooting from behind the arc. Clancy and Scalabrine also led the Trojans in rebounds, pulling in eight each.
The game was pretty ugly though, with a lot of fouling, and not much consistency from either team, especially in the second half. The Trojans led by as many as 20 in the second half, and while Northridge would make little runs here and there, both sides committed a lot of fouls and turned the ball over a lot. Braswell's team in fact had 27 turnovers while the Trojans "only" had 18. And once again, Northridge starts off yet another season suspending one of its top players: This season, it's Andre Larry, who didn't play because he was serving the first of a two game suspension for playing in a non-NCAA sanctioned basketball league (and that's actually a new one on us; we knew that coaches could only attend NCAA certified events, but we didn't know that college players could only play in sanctioned leagues during the summer. . .).
Craig Calloway (Long Beach Jordan), a true freshman, played only sparingly, about 7 minutes in all, scoring 5 points, a 3 pointer and two free throws. David Bluthenthal (Westchester), who has had two great exhibition games, was not particularly effective scoring only 4 points in 23 minutes of play, shooting 2-7 overall from the field and 0-2 from behind the three point line.
Here's the box score from the game:
