Stanford Beats UCSB In Opener
For Gauchos--(Nov. 21, 1999)
Casey Jacobsen got off to a rocky start in his first college game in SoCal, going 0-7 from the field, and 0-6 from behind the arc, but he hit all 7 of his free throw attempts as Stanford was paced by Jarron Collins' 21 points and 12 boards, as No. 9 Stanford beat UCSB on Saturday night at the Thunderdome in Santa Barbara, 62-49. BJ Ward also got his first college start, due to the indefinite suspension of UCSB's senior point guard Larry Bell. Like Jacobsen, Ward couldn't hit from the field, going 0-6, but managed to make all 6 of his free throw attempts to finish with 6 points. For Stanford, Ryan Menendez also had 12 boards and he hit a key jumper to start a small run which game Stanford a 32-29 lead with 15:24 remaining.
The UCSB Thunderdome was packed, and the game was witnessed by 6,031 screaming fans. UCSB coach Bob Williams told reporters after the game, "I thought the crowd was unbelievable -- one of the best I've ever seen. If we could have just made a couple 3's, I think we could have kept the crowd in it."
The game was the regular season opener for UCSB, which was rocked last week by news that two of it's players were alleged to be involved in the fraudulent use of a telephone credit card belonging to someone else; the two players, Larry Bell and freshman redshirt Eric Hare, were arrested last week, and have been suspended indefinitely from the team.
The Gauchos jumped out to an early lead and when freshman Mark Hull hit a layup with 6:21 remaining, which gave UCSB a 19-12 edge, their biggest of the game. However, with 2:12 to play in the first half, the Cardinal took their first lead on a three-pointer by Michael McDonald. Stanford never trailed again and they led at half, 25-21. The Cardinal went on a 5-0 run to start the second half, increasing the advantage to 30-21. UCSB rallied, scoring eight unanswered points to cut Stanford's lead to one. The Cardinal, however built the lead back up and kept it between five and nine the most of the remainder of the game. The Gauchos committed several intentional fouls in the final two minutes, resulting in the 13-point final margin, the largest of the game.
UCSB was led by Hull who had 13 points and seven rebounds. He was the only Gaucho in double-figures, but junior Juliano Jordani had eight points and a team-high eight rebounds. In addition to Jarron Collins and Mendez, the Cardinal were led by David Moseley who had ten points.
Both the Gauchos and Cardinal struggled on the offensive end of the floor. UCSB made only 29-percent of its shots while Stanford struggled to 26-percent. The Cardinal, however, outrebounded the Gauchos 44-37 and UCSB turned the ball over 18 times. Each team struggled from three-point range. UCSB hit only 2-for-15 (13-percent) and Stanford made only 4-of-25 (16-percent). Stanford also made 28-of-39 free throws and the Gauchos hit 21-of-28.
UCSB is now 0-1 on the season. Stanford is 3-0. The Gauchos hit the road for the next two contests, traveling to San Jose State for a 7:30 p.m. game on Wednesday. They will play USF on Sunday, November 28 at 3:00 p.m.
A complete report of the game can be found at either the Stanford official website, or at the new UCSB FansOnly.com website, which is the school's new official website (and it has a much more complete report on the game than does the Stanford site).
