Muir 76, Marshall Fundamental 75 --We heard from Kristoff Fajardo, who tells us he's the Marshall statistician who said: "In the expected very emotional game for the players....Muir edges Marshall 76-75 in regulation time. We have to give Marshall some credit, (D IV school, 900 students) for hanging with Muir (D II school, 2500 students). This tradition between the schools has been going for a about 5 years and this is the Marshall team that got closest to beating Muir." And this from the Pasadena Star-News' Kevin Chavez, a staff writer for the paper: The Muir and Marshall high school basketball teams wasted little time playing a marquee matchup on opening night Monday. The quality of play may have suffered at times, but the game lived up to its billing and came down to the final buzzer with the Mustangs holding off the visiting Eagles, 76-75, in front of a raucous, packed crowd. With less than three minutes remaining in the game, Marshall trailed by 11 points, 71-60. But the Eagles went on a frantic 12-3 run punctuated by thunderous dunks by De'Verion Mackey on a putback and Jason Sanford off a great feed from Mackey to get within 74-72 with 10 seconds left. But Muir's Jonathan Williams calmly hit two of his game-high 22 points from the free-throw line to give Muir a four-point lead. Marshall guard Jovan Jester hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but it was not enough. "If we only had four more seconds," said Marshall coach Kyle Douglas. "I love those types of games; they're going to build character." Muir did most of its damage in the first quarter. The Eagles came out playing sloppy, thanks to Muir's tough man-to-man defense. Williams was sharp, hitting three 3-pointers and 11 points in the quarter. "Muir's beaten us so bad for so long that the guys were caught up in the 'Muir Mystique'," Douglas said. "They were a little tentative. Then, they realized that our game plan can work." Mackey and Sanford, Marshall's top returning players, were blanked in the first quarter, but broke out in the second with some electrifying plays. Sanford elevated for a dunk off a reverse pivot, then Mackey answered with a double-pump dunk and reverse jam on a breakaway to bring the crowd to its feet and cut the Muir lead to 23-19. "Any time two schools from the same city get together, it's just a different atmosphere," Muir coach Don Grant said. "The kids have grown up together and it gets emotional." The smaller Mustangs kept playing their game and, at the beginning of the third quarter, went on a 13-2 run to lead, 48-31. Muir saw its lead dwindle to 10 with a number of fouls and turnovers in the final 4 1/2 minutes of the quarter. "I think it hurt us when Jonathan (Williams) got in foul trouble," Grant said. "Darelle Rowe had to play (point guard) where he's never played and they got a little momentum." Mackey and Sanford combined for 21 fourth-quarter points, 40 overall, but it was too late. "Marshall played inspired basketball, more than us," Grant said. "De'Verion Mackey was the best player on the court; he proved it tonight."
