Redondo Union and Mira Costa will again be hosting the Pacific Shores Boys Basketabll Tournament, and this year's field will make it one of the top tournaments in the State. The field this year includes:
Redondo Union HS | Mira Costa HS
Bishop Montgomery HS | LA Fairfax HS
Valencia (Valencia) | North Torrance HS
South Torrance HS | Morningside HS
Mayfair HS | LA Bell HS | |
Leuzinger HS | Hawthorne HS
LA Jefferson HS | LA Carson HS
LA Banning HS | LA Washington HS |
The field this year includes three defending league champions, one CIF Southern Section Champion, two State Finalists and four teams which will certainly be ranked among the tops in the SCIBCA Polls this season. Top players include Andrew Zahn (Redondo), Errick and Derrick Craven (Bishop Montgomery), Josh Childress (Mayfair) and Jason Morrissette (Fairfax). You'll also see others such as Dijon Thompson (Redondo), Adam Zahn (Redondo), Kenny D'Oyen (Bishop Montgomery), Devaughn Peace (Bishop Montgomery), Kenny Pruitt (Bishop Montgomery), Edwin Draughan (Mayfair), Dontae Bradford (Mayfair), Dwane Trotter (Morningside), Ricky Rico (Morningside), Tracey Cathey (Morningside), Evan Burns (Fairfax), Craig Smith (Fairfax), Scottie Stern (Fairfax), and a ton of other good players.
The tournament is in it's 48th year, and it's attracted top players from all over, including a ton of NBA players: Paul Pierce (Celtics), Elden Campbell (Lakers, Hornets), Harold Minor (USC, Cavs), Eric Leckner (Jazz), Byron Scott (Lakers, Kings), Reggie Theus (Bulls), Paul Westphal (Sonics Head Coach). There have also been some recent players who are now or have recently played at the D-I and D-II levels, including Joe Shipp (Cal), Stanley Thorne (LMU), Jesse Boyd (Cal Poly), Danny Dinh (Cal State Fullerton), Jason Kapono (UCLA), Sais Boseman (USC), Shane Willis (Utah), David Aaron (Santa Clara) Chris Sanele (ASU), and on and on.
We don't have the complete bracketing or the schedule, but we anticipate that Jim Neilsen and/or Glenn Marx, the head coaches at Redondo and Mira Costa, respectively, will send us some stuff soon. The tournament is also looking for and welcomes the support of local area residents (and non-residents too; heck, they'll sell tickets to anyone), and they're always looking for good sponsorship opportunities from local businesses. For further information or for sponsorship opportunities and/or donations, you can contact John Tawa, the media relations director for the tournament, at (310) 372-4611.
See you there.
