48th Annual Pacific Shores Tournament
More First Round Games Today--(Nov. 30, 1999)

The high school season in SoCal began yesterday, and while there are several early tournaments taking place in and around SoCal, one of the first, oldest and best is the Pacific Shores Tournament, which is in it's 48th year, hosted by Redondo Union and Mira Costa High Schools.

The tournament began yesterday with four first round matchups (scores below)  and will continue through December 4.  The Championship game will take place at Redondo Union on Saturday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m.; it will be preceded by the third place game at 6:00 p[.m. and the Consolation Championship at 4:00 p.m.  In between there will be some excellent matchups.  Here's the first round. Today's games are highlighted in red:

There was evidently also a change in the schedule, and the Bell v. Redondo game, which had been scheduled for Monday, was moved to accomodate the Mayfair v. LA Washington game.  We're not sure, but we think Redondo v. Bell will be at 6:00 p.m. tonight, but it's possible that the Valencia v. LA Jefferson game will be moved up to 6:00 p.m. instead of 7:30.  Guess you'll have to go to find out.

Day Time Location Opponents

Monday 7: 30 p.m. Mira Costa Banning 35, Bishop Montgomery 96

Tuesday 6:00 p.m. Redondo Union Bell v. Redondo
Tuesday 7:30 p.m. Redondo Union Valencia v. LA Jefferson

Redondo Union HS is located at 631 Vincent Park, in Redondo Beach.  Take the 405 to Hawthorne and continue south to Del Amo, and then turn West into the school.  Mira Costa is located at 701 South Peck Avenue, in Manhattan Beach.   From the 405 exhit at Redondo Beach Blvd (west) and take that to Peck. Redondo Beach turns into Artesia past Hawthorne, so pay attention.

Here's some maps below just in case the above didn't make any sense:

And in case you missed them, here are the details of the other half of the first round games from Monday:

Bishop Montgomery 96, Banning 35--Bishop Montgomery's Errick and Derrick Craven (6'-2" Jr. G) led third-seeded Bishop Montgomery to a 96-35 victory over Banning in the first round of the 48th Annual Pacific Shores Tournament at Mira Costa on Monday. The Cravens led a relentless defensive effort, as the Knights (1-0) took advantage of Banning's 17 first-half turnovers to mount a 53-14 lead. Derrick Craven scored 12 of his game-high 20 points in the first quarter. Errick Craven (16 points) ripped off two left-handed dunks in a one-minute span to give Bishop Montgomery a 39-8 advantage early in the second quarter. Brian Pruitt added 16 points and freshman Fred Washington had 13 for the Knights. Tony Lara and Jerry Jackson scored 14 points apiece for Banning (0-1), which shot 23 percent from the floor.

Fairfax 96, Hawthorne 60-- Top-seeded and two-time defending Pacific Shores champion Fairfax overcame Adon Baines' 31 points for Hawthorne at Mira Costa.

Morningside 66, Leuzinger 56-- The Monarchs extended a one-point halftime lead by outscoring the Olympians, 19-7, in the third quarter in the first round at Redondo. Donte Tatum led Morningside with 16 points. Tyrone Reed scored a game-high 17 points for Leuzinger.

Mayfair 65, Washington 30-- The fourth-seeded Monsoons had no problems in their first-round game at Redondo. Josh Childress hit for 23 points, and Eddie Draughan had 14. Bonds hit for 4, and Lewie Helton scored 5. Pittman had 2 and Washington 4. Chris Childress scored 6, while Mollette scored 2 and Donte Bradford scored 5. The game was never in doubt and Mayfair led 11-5 at the end of the first quarter and then broke out to a 29-12 lead at the half. The Monsoons extended that to 46-22 at the end of the third, and eventually outscored the Generals 18-8 in the fourth quarter. Scoring for Washington was not available.
