High School Team Preview:
Orange High School--(Nov. 26, 1999)

Orange High School is coached by Randy Castillo, who is in his first year as a high school head coach. The school is located at 525 North Shaffer Street, in Orange, CA, and is part of the Orange Unified School District, a public school district.  The school is a coed, 4 year high school with an enrollment (at least last year) of 2075 students, which places it in Division II-AA, or possibly Division I-A.  The team competes in the Century League against Canyon (Anaheim), El Modena, Foothill, Santa Ana Valley and Villa Park, and last season they finished last in the league, sixth out of six, with an overall record of 10-15, but a dismal league showing of only 2-8.

Again, as with most of the previews we're posting up today, we haven't had the chance to talk personally with coach Castillo, and so we'll have to rely on just what our archives tell us about Orange, and what's available so far from the previews published by the Orange County Register and the LA Times. Here's what we know about the roster thus far:

Blake Dodge 5'-11" Sr. F/G
Faustino Luna 5'-8" Sr. G
Bayron Ortega 6'-4" Sr. C
Damon Cook 6'-3" Jr. F
Anthony Neal 5'-11" So. G
Toby Law ??  ??  ??
CJ Joiner 6'-1" Sr. F

That's a pretty thin roster, and undoubtedly there will be others, and perhaps coach Castillo, being new to the process of these previews, really took the papers seriously when they asked him to identify his key players, because it seems that's all he listed on the preview forms, that is unless the Times and the Register are holding out on us.   Assuming they're not trying to keep the others on the team a big fat secret, we're guessing that Coach Castillo had not yet made up his mind about who was going to make the varsity and who would play jv. We won't have to wait long to find out, because the league season starts this week, but then we also have another handicap when it comes to reporting on Orange HS. It also seems that the last coach didn't submit the schedule for this year to the CIF, and so the 1999-2000 "Master Schedule and Media Guide" doesn't contain one, and thus we can't tell you where and when they'll be playing.  We suppose we could piece together at least a league schedule, by looking at the other schedules for Century League Teams, but really, who has time for that?

Here's what the LA Times said about the team this season:

"With the transfer of the county's leading scorer, Stephen Miller, to Anaheim, the Panthers return no starters. Seniors Blake Dodge, a 5-11 guard; C.J. Joiner, a 6-1 forward, and Faustino Luna, a 5-9 guard, were part of a team that finished fifth in league last season. Damon Cook, a transfer from Mater Dei; Toby Law; Anthony Neal, and 6-5 Bayron Ortega figure to see a lot of playing time."

The Register said the following:

"The Panthers went through some major off-season changes, adding Coach Castillo from St. Paul of Santa Fe Springs while losing guard Steve Miller, the county's scoring leader last season who transferred to Anaheim. Orange will have to play smart and tough to get to .500 or better."

Sorry, that's the best we can do for now. See, we told you some of these previews would be short.  Oh, we can post up a map of where the school is located, which should be useful if we ever get a schedule:
