Cal Poly Pomona Signs
Four From SoCal--(Nov. 19, 1999)

Our friends at Cal Poly Pomona sent us a press release this morning announcing their National Letters of Intent signings, and it looks like the efforts of head coach Tim Rapp and his assistants (including our friend Steve Wachs, who scoured all of the local tournaments this summer and fall) have really paid off.    The Broncos signed four players, including James Cady from Stockdale in Bakersfield (which we announced earlier in the week) but what we didn't know was that they also got LOI's from Serra's Earl Lewis, Mayfair's Jeff Bonds (6'-5" Sr. SF), and Jimmy Landry (6'-4" So. G) from Sonora, who is transferring from Sacramento State after playing in a backup for the Hornets last year.  These are all top-quality signings, and these guys should be major contributors for the Broncos next year.

Here's the press release:

Broncos Net Four in Early Signing Period

POMONA—Cal Poly Pomona Men’s Basketball Coach Tim Rapp has announced the signing of four athletes to national letters-of-intent. The four athletes are Jeff Bonds, James Cady, Jimmy Landry and Earl Lewis.

Bonds is a 6-5, 190-pound, forward from Lakewood who is currently attending Mayfair High School. Last year, he helped the team to a CIF title, while averaging 15 points and eight rebounds a game and earning All-Surbaban league honors. An athletic individual, he has the ability to play several positions for the Broncos.

"Bonds is a talented athlete who is very versatile," comments Rapp. "He plays the power forward and post spots for his high school team but has the ability to play four positions.

Cady is a 6-10, 225-pound, center from Bakesfield’s Stockdale High School. The All-Southwest Yosemite League selection averaged 14 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks last season. Pac West Hoops and Southern California Hoops, two basketball internet sites, have rated Cady as one of the top centers in the West Coast.

"Cady is a legitimate big man, inside player with good hands who has the desire and skills to be a very good player," said Rapp

"Bonds and Cady are high-level recruits who can impact our program as freshmen," said Rapp. "I think both of them can be very good players in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. With the addition of these two and our three freshman from last year’s signings, our team nucleus will be solid for the next few years."

Landry is a 6-4, 195-pound guard who is coming to the Broncos from Sacarmento State University. A high school prep product of Sonora High School in La Habra, he played in 19 games for the Hornets last year in a reserve role.

"Landry is a very hard-nosed, tough athlete who is experienced at the NCAA Division I college level," stated Rapp. "It should enable him to play immediately next year. He is a good defender who has the ability to defend some of the best players in the CCAA."

Lewis is a 6-5, 210-pound, forward from Gardena’s Serra High School where he was a three-time All-Del Rey honoree. Lewis averaged 20 points and nine rebounds per game as a senior and as the team MVP.

"Lewis had a very successful high school career. He is a natural scorer and should get valuable experience at the junior college level this year, which should allow him to maintain his on-court competitiveness," said Rapp
