Las Vegas Reebok Holiday Prep Classic--(Nov. 6, 1998)

If you've been reading our High School Previews for the 1998-99 season, then you know that many of the teams we've profiled will be appearing in Las Vegas from December 19-23 at the Reebok Holiday Prep Classic. This is one of the best and oldest holiday tournaments, and if you're looking for an excuse to come to Vegas and to see some of the best teams in the country, then you can't find a better one than this.

This year the tournament will feature 54 teams, including last year's California  Division I State Champions, Westchester. Other top seeds are Moutain View (Mesa, AZ), Durango (Las Vegas, NV), Stratford (Houston, TX), Horizon (San Diego), Fontana, Fresno Washington Union, Overland (Aurora, Colorado), Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, VA), Newport (Bellvue, WA), Long Beach Jordan, Marian Catholic (San Diego, CA), Sylmar (Los Angeles, CA), Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA), Galena (Reno, NV), Fresno Edison, St. Mary's (New York), Mt. Zion (Durham, NC), Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV), Paul Robeson (Brooklyn, New York), St. Ignatius (San Franciso, CA), Compton Dominguez (Compton, CA), and San Bernardino Pacific.

We'll be posting the brackets up shortly, just as soon as time permits, and the first round schedules for all the games in each of the six brackets for the tournament.

This year, the tournament runs from Saturday, December 19, through Wednesday, December 23 (there are no games on Sunday).  Unlike last year and previous years, the tournament will not begin on Friday night, perhaps due to the difficulty of travel and scheduling, with most teams preferring to use Friday for a travel day and getting settled into the hotels before beginning play on Saturday morning.   Makes sense to us.   The Championship game will be played on Wednesday, December 23, 1998 at 7:35 p.m. at Durango's Main gym.

Like last year, the tournament will be held at two locations, in four gyms (main and auxiliary), at both Cimarron-Memorial High School and at Durango High School.

If you've never been to this tournament, you won't want to miss it.  Make your reservations early, because Vegas is crowded at this time of year.  See you there.
