Shantay Legans Signs As Expected
With Cal Yesterday (Nov. 13, 1998)
The Santa Barbara News-Presss ran a very nice
feature story about Shantay Legans (5'-10" Sr. PG) yesterday, who signed a National
Letter of Intent to play for the Bears next year. In a story written by staff writer
Dan Shiells, Shantay describes what it was like trying to qualify. He had to take an
extra math class (Algebra 3/4) in order to meet the UC requirements: "Qualifying
(for Cal) was hard,'' Legans told Shiells. "I had to study real hard for the SAT. I
had to take the extra math - that was a bummer. But I really want to go to Cal. And it's
kind of fun learning math. I have some friends in the class and that helps."
Apparently, Shantay thought he was finished with Math classes, but after he accepted Cal's
offer, he was informed he'd still have to take another math class in order to
qualify under UC's "A-through-F" requirements.
Legans, who has been a four-year starter at Dos Pueblos, and who has led the Chargers to two straight Channel League titles, averaged 18.5 points, five assists and five steals per game and was named MVP for both the county and the Channel League last year.
He told the News-Press that he ". . . chose Cal because it was close enough I could still come down if there are problems at home - or if I have problems - but still far enough away to be away from home." Legans' mother, Susan, told the News-Press that it was "exciting" to see Shantay actually sign papers to attend college on a scholarship. "It makes all the hard work he's done and I've done with him worthwhile,'' she told Shiells. "Going to L.A., all those trips, since the ninth grade, from March until the middle of July every summer . . . there have been a lot of sacrifices," Legans' mother said, referring to Rockfish team practices, games and tournaments.
Shantay took unofficial visits to Duke,
Indiana, USC, UCLA and Notre Dame, before settling on Cal.
Dos Pueblos basketball coach Phil Sherman told the Santa Barbara paper that he was not
directly involved with Legans' recruiting process but was pleased to see him sign with a
Pac-10 school. "It's good for Dos Pueblos and good for the Channel League,'' he
said. "I don't think there have been many guys, even from the league, that have
signed with Pac-10 schools."
Congratulations to Shantay from all of us over here at SoCalHoops.
