CIF State Southern Regional Tournament:
More From San Diego--(Nov. 15, 1998)

San Diego State's Cox Arena will be hosting not one, but four Southern California Regional high school basketball playoff games in March. As we noted a few days ago, this will be the first time ever that San Diego has been included in the basketball playoff picture, but maybe not the last. "I think the state will monitor how it goes, and if we do a good job the state will consider San Diego as a future site for the state championships," Dennis Ackerman, assistant commissioner of the CIF-San Diego Section told the San Diego Union-Tribune.

If there are good crowds for the four March 13 games (in divisions to be determined at the seeding meeting in early March) and if the teams and officials are treated well, this area will certainly be considered again.  According to Ackerman, it could have been even better this year. The state was looking into the feasibility of San Diego hosting all 10 games, using the RIMAC facility at UCSD for the smaller divisions and placing six games in Cox Arena. But UCSD could not guarantee RIMAC, however, just as it couldn't guarantee it two years ago, making the high schools sweat it out until the last minute, because of the possibility of hosting an NCAA Division III tournament. Instead, the other six games this winter will be played at the Pyramid in Long Beach, site of last year's SoCal Regional for Divisions III and IV
