JC Hoops: Schea Cotton & LBCC
Continue To Impress--(Nov. 25, 1998)
Long Beach City College basketball hasn't had it this good
in years. But then they haven't had someone with Schea Cotton's style and ability in years
either. Last night they played their home opener in front of about 1,000 fans, and they
beat Antelope Valley JC 99-75. Long Beach improves to 7-0 on the year, while
Antelope Valley is now just 1-3. Cotton was, as everyone expected, pretty much the
star of the show, and he began the game with a nice three-pointer and ended up scoring 22
points on 8 for 13 shooting from the field and 4 for 7 from the line; not spectacular
numbers, but very nice indeed, and if you're Schea, right about now you're probably just
glad to be playing. . . somewhere.
Prior to last night's game, LBCC has averaged more than 90 points per game. Cotton
hasn't done it all alone (he's not Wilt Chamberlain, but then who is?) but he has managed
to bring the level of play up for the entire team. "I don't think people realize how
much better Schea makes everyone else," coach Gary Anderson told the Long Beach
Press-Telegram after the game.
This was also an impressive defensive performance by the Long Beach City College team, and
because of the swarming, athletic style of defense, Antelope Valley managed to hit only 25
of 60 from the field and 20 of 44 free throws. The Vikings outrebounded AV 57-32, and
Blunt and Derek Emery (6'-10" So. C) each getting 10 boards. Other scorers for Long
Beach included Isamu Nichols with 21 points, Jim Brewer with 11 points and 8 assists,
Kevin Blunt with 9 points, and Emery and Darnell Williams each finished with 8 points.
