High School Team Preview:
Pomona High--(Nov. 28, 1998)

"          "--Derrick Pugh, head coach, Pomona High.

We couldn't reach Derrick during the pre-season, so we have no idea who will really be on this team.  Pomona competes during the regular season in the Miramonte League against teams like Charter Oak,   Diamond Ranch, Garey,  Los Altos,  and  Wilson/Hacienda Hts.  Pomona played last year in Division III-AA in Southern Section, and they made it to the semifinals of Southern Section playoffs where they lost to eventual champion Ocean View.

We're not sure who else will show up on the roster, but here are three guys we know will be there:

Aaron Thomas (6'-5" Sr. SG): Aaron played well this summer and fall, and is a sort of streaky shooter who can hit it out to NBA range. He's a good athlete, with excellent ballhandling skills, and we think that he's a definite D-I prospect.

Lamar Kent (6'-8" Sr. PF): At the forward spot, look for Lamar , a very large, 270 lb. guy, with great potential but very raw. He runs the floor well and plays with great strength and will be assisted in the frontcourt by Shomari Sarpy

Shomari Sarpy (6'-9" Sr. C):   Shomari is a great shotblocker, thin and wiry, and what he doesn't have in bulk in the paint, he makes up for with his great agility and defensive quickness. He's got great hands, and has even developed a nice perimeter shot. He played very well at the Long Beach Fall Hoops Classic.

Assuming there have been no transfers, here's who was there last year as well, and who we'd expect to see returning:

Chris Lee (6'-4" Sr. SF) Chris plays the 4 but he can also handle the three position, and he's a good perimeter shooter, very athletic, excellent under the boards, and he can slash to the hole and finish. He has great lateral quickness and speed.

David Jones (6'-0" Sr. SG) David has a good jump shot and a good handle, and plays tenacious defense. He's a very quick athletic player.

Pomona will be playing at Chaffey on Monday, Novebmer 30, then they'll appearing at the Reebok Compton Tip-Off Classic on Tuesday December 1 where they will play The Bishop's School from La Jolla which plays in the San Diego Section of CIF.  From December 2-5 they'll be playing at the JW North Tournament, and whatever else they are doing this december will be a mystery.

Again, how well this team does, will probably depend on who shows up.  They do have at least three D-I prospects, so it will be a fun team to watch.
