Kurt Mjoen Reportedly Resigns
From Simi Team--(Nov. 17, 1998)
We learned today that Kurt Mjoen (6'-4" Sr. PF), one of the key role-players on the Simi Valley team last year, who was expected to again contend for a starting spot, has resigned from the team. The Daily News confirmed that Kurt has left the team, and according to their published story, the spot will be taken by Dustin Villepigue (6'-8" So. PF/C), who reportedly has grown 6 inches in the last year.
We're not sure why Kurt resigned, but it seems clear that it was an issue over playing time. With Shaun Michel (6'-2" So. PG) covering the point spot full time now that Brandon Foster (5'-8" Sr. PG) has transferred to Royal, Rafael Berumen (6'-9" Sr. C/F) covering the center and power forward spot, and Brett Michel (6'-6" Jr. SF/SG) and Branduinn Fullove (6'-5" Jr. SG) at the wings, that left only one other open spot in the starting rotation, and Dustin, at 6'-8" was just too good for Dean Bradshaw to pass up including in the starting lineup.
Whether any other players will be brought up from the jv to fill the extra slot on the varsity is unknown at this time. And while Kurt was a solid player, never much of a scoring threat on this team, but always the guy who went out and did most of the dirty work and setting of picks, we don't think that his absence will materially impact Simi's pre-season status as one of the D-I-AA favorites in Southern Section and Marmonte League, although Moorpark and Newbury Park, the defending champion, have got to be considered close contenders in league.
