Jason Kapono Update: No News For Now--(Nov. 18, 1998)
If there's no news, then why are we writing about Jason Kapono (6'-8" Sr. G/F)? Because just the name "Jason Kapono" is news. We spoke with Jason's dad this evening, and he told us that Jason will obviously not sign during the early period, but will wait until the spring. "He visited UNLV, Rhode Island, Missouri and Utah and enjoyed all of his vists. It's possible that he'll still work in one more visits, maybe with Syracuse or NC State, but he won't have any time until sometime after January." Ever the good poker player, he clearly said there are no favorites right now: "He had a good time at each of the schools he visited. It's going to be really hard for him to make the choice this spring."
We asked about some of the other schools that Jason was interested in visiting originally and others who may have been interested in him, schools like Stanford or UCLA, and Mr. Kapono replied, "Oh, things just happen sometimes. You know, maybe it just wasn't a fit for Jason for one reason or another." Of course, wherever he ends up playing, he'll get a great education, and be an immediate impact player.
As for this year, Joe Kapono said "Jason really wants to work on getting to the State Championship this year. The team will work really hard for that one. They thought they deserved to be in the title game last year, so this year, they're going to do what they need to do to try to make it happen. That's what Jason really wants right now."
