Tournament Week Kickoff:
Glendora Triple Crown Classic--(Nov. 28, 1998)

This Monday, Nov. 30,  marks the beginning of one of the busiest times for teams in high school basketball, the beginning of the December tournament madness.  Actually, it's not just tournaments, but also includes non-league single game exhibitions. One of the best of these will be the First Annual Glendora High School Triple Crown Challenge, which takes place on Tuesday, December 1, 1998 at Glendora High.  The event will feature six of the top teams in the State, many of whom we've already profiled.  Here's the lineup with links to those teams we've previewed previously:

5:00 Sonora (La Habra) vs Los Alamitos
6:30 Mater Dei vs San Clemente
8:00 Glendora vs Ayala

Mater Dei is certainly back at full strength this year, and is loaded; Glendora of course features Casey Jacobsen and Chris Clark, while Ayala features Jack May, Chris Pacana and Daniel Sherman; Los Alamitos is also strong this year with big man Jeff Grgas, Ron Prettyman, and foreign D-I signee Andrew Pleick.  We haven't yet previewed either Sonora or San Clemente, but they do feature two  of the best players in  Orange County, Marqui Worthy, who averaged 18 ppg, and Sunny Hills transfer Bim Okunrinboye, who averaged 19.3 ppg last year.  San Clemente, which plays in the strong South Coast League with Capo Valley and Mater Dei, features Joe Tatala, a 6'-5" center, Brian George, a 6'-6" forward, and Mitch Pierce, a 6'-5" swingman.

This should be a great event, and we know that Glendora coach Mike LeDuc and Mater Dei coach Gary McKnight will be using it as a tuneup and scouting event for Friday's matchup between Glendora and Mater Dei in the 2nd Annual John R. Wooden High School Invitational at 9:00 p.m. at the Pond in Anaheim.

If you can make it over to Glendora High on Tuesday, you'll see some great action.  We won't be able to be there (prior committments) but we're expecting that some of our readers (Tom, are you listening) will pay the $5.00 admission at the door, and send us a report.  We're also told that if you have any questions at all about the event, that you can contact Howard Hawkins at 909-593-1388.
