Gilbert Arenas Signs With Arizona. . . Finally--(Nov. 13, 1998)
After all the hoopla and fuss, Gilbert Arenas (6'-4"
Sr. SG) from Van Nuys Grant High, probably one of the most talented seniors on the West
Coast this year, signed a letter of intent with Arizona. Arenas averaged 29.7 points, 6.4
rebounds,
5.9 assists and three steals last season, and as far as we know, is now fully qualified in
his core courses and his SAT. We've written so much about Gilbert the past year that
it hardly requires a full recitation of all of his skills. We talked last night
after the UCLA game to Steve Lavin, commenting that JaRon Rush reminded us a little bit of
what we think Gilbert Arenas is capable of doing on the court, and Lavin agreed, saying
"Yes, he's really good and with him and Ruben Douglas, Arizona will be giving us fits
for the next few years." You can't ask for higher praise than that.
Gilbert turned down offers from DePaul and Kansas State. Congratulations to the Wildcats and to Gilbert.
