Games Today: SDSU v. Fullerton;
Long Beach Takes On Pepperdine--(Nov. 21, 1998)
This is just a little reminder that there's lots of college hoops going on today in SoCal, and there will be two fairly big games tonight.
First up is Pepperdine v. Long Beach State at 7:p.m. at the Pyramid. If you can't make it, the game is on KIEV radio (870 AM), but there is no television. Hey, when is FSW going to start covering some of the local college action? Pepperdine is trying to maintain it's winning streak, and will attempt to get it's first 4-0 start since 1991-92. Marc McDowell, a senior, is averaging 15.7 ppg and 7.0 rpg, while Jelani Gardner has brought his Pac-10 level game to the WCC, averaging 15.3 ppg and giving out 6.7 assists per game. Pepperdine will be without Tezale Archi, who went under the knife on Thursday to repare a broken left little finger, an injury he sustained when Pepperdine played UC Irvine last week.
Long Beach is 1-1 after having their heads handed to them by CSUN in the opener and then rebounding on Thursday night with an overtime win against Loyola-Marymount. Ramel "Rock" Lloyd is leading the Beach, averaging 20 ppg, and Mate Milisa is averaging 18.5 per game and nine boards, and this should be the better of the two local contests.
The other game featured today is Cal State Fullerton v. San Diego State. Last week, Cal State Fullerton (0-1) got hammered by Kansas State, 72-51, at Bramlage Coliseum in Kansas. Ike Harmon (6'-7" Jr. F) didn't play though in that game, and he's expected to be ready to play today. Harmon might have helped the Titans shoot better than 27.5 percent from the floor against Kansas, and might also have helped in the rebounding too, as the Titans were out-rebounded 58-35 by the Wildcats. Fullerton has some other good players who could step up, including Mark Richardson who grabbed 10 boards against KSU, and freshman forward Josh Helbig. Unfortunately, the Titans will be without the services of Kito Patterson (6'-3" Jr. G) a walk-on transfer from Bakersfield JC who made the Titans squad but is academically ineligible.
For San Diego, it can't get much worse than it got on Tuesday night at the Sports Arena. David Abramowitz will not play tonight, and hopefully, coach Trenkle will figure out something that will work with this group of mostly freshmen.
