"We Care Classic" Schedules & Results--(Nov. 24, 1998)

We weren't able to make it over yesterday to the We Care Classic Tournament being held at Manual Arts High School, but we got a pretty good report on what happened from Manual Arts coach Randolph Simpson, who informed us that Manual beat Hollywood 96-55, Fremont beat Monroe 85-55, San Pedro beat LA Jordan 63-54, and LA High beat Gardena by one point.  "I don't have the final score of that game," Simpson told us, "because it wasn't entered in our official book, but LA looked good."  Scottie Stern (6'-4" Jr. SG/SF) looked very good, scoring 15 points, and Roger Flowers (6'-2" ?? SG/SF) also had 17 points on the night.

For Manual Arts, there were 5 players in double figures:  James Wright (6'-0" Sr. PG), who has committed to Long Beach State had 21,  Brandon Moorer (6'-8" Sr. PF/C) and Larry Dillingham (6'-2" Sr. PG) both had 15 points, while Curtis Millage (5'-11" Sr. PG/SG) had 12, and Otis Belisle (6'-2" Sr. SG/SF) had 11.  Johnny Hardwick (6'-10" Sr. C) only had 9 points, but he did have 11 rebounds, a very impressive outing.

Here's today's (Tuesday) schedule:

4:00 p.m.  Hollywood v. San Pedro
5:30 p.m.  LA High v. Monroe
7:00 p.m.  Gardena v. Fremont
8:30 p.m.  Manual Arts v. LA Jordan

And tomorrow there's also the added benefit of a small Magnet Tournament added to the mix of teams playing, and at 1:00 p.m. Middle College Magnet will match up against Elizabeth Street Magnet, and at 2:30 USC-Mast will face DTBM.  At 4:00 p.m. the other games will begin:

Wednesday, November 25, 1998:

4:00 p.m. Gardena v. Monroe
5:30 p.m. LA Jordan v. Hollywood
7:00 p.m.  Fremont v. LA High
8:30 p.m.  Manual Arts v. San Pedro

The tournament takes the day off for Thanksgiving and resumes with playoffs on Friday. We'll have more reports by then.

If you're interested in coming down, Manual Arts is located near the intersection of 41st Street and Normandie, just across (south of) Martin Luther King Boulevard.  The best way to get there from  the city   (i.e., downtown) is to take Normandie south and avoid the freeway.  If you must take the freeway, take the 10 and get off at Normandie and head south. Go across MLK Blvd, and when you get to 41st, turn left into the school.  And remember, all admissions go to benefit the homeless and feed the hungry during Thanksgiving.

See you there.
